Hi and all,

Karin, your answer is only partially correct as the MAIN reason to

complete a course of antibiotic therapy is to ensure that a full

therapeutic effect is achieved in destroying or reducing the number

of pathogenic microorganisms, in this case, foreign bacteria.

Respectfully,

Dear PTJ,

I think some doctors are giving pts the wrong antibiotic, not

necessarily more. If amoxicillin can do the trick, then why are you

prescribing Zinacef? I do not think that this is the practice of the

majority of doctors.

Hooe this helps,

I think any of the websites that describe how candida albicans becomes a

problem go into that. The website with Dr. Crooks' questionnaire goes

into it.

In addition to that:

Have you asked your friend to explain why they think antibiotics are

good for them?

Perhaps knowing what they are trying to achieve will help you point to

safer and more effective alternatives to get there?

Welcome, Kim! Several people here are on (or have been on) the

antibiotic therapy. There have been a couple of posts recently about

it. You can search the archives and find what they have to say. I

seem to remember that most were positive but that one person said it

worked at first but then stopped working. I tried unsuccessfully to

find a doctor in my area willing to prescribe it. Nothing within

several hundred miles of my home. I was told by roadback.org that

there used to be several in my area, but that they had discontinued

it. That concerned me - why would they stop? I assume they had not

been happy with the results they were getting.

It would surely be a bummer to have to quit breastfeeding your baby

sooner than you had wanted. For me, the decision would depend on how

much pain I was experiencing, what my x-rays looked like, and how much

longer until I would be quitting anyway. If your doctor thinks you are

already beginning to have some damage, I would be more inclined to

start the MTX sooner. If you only have mild symptoms and no sign of

damage yet, you might be able to delay starting MTX by months or even a

year, depending how you do. If your baby is very young and you

intended to BF for several years and your joints are already being

damaged, you might need to consider that having a healthy mom who is

not disabled is more important to your child than being BF. This is a

tough decision for you, I'm sure. I know it would be for me.

We have several young moms here and they have faced the same dilemma -

hopefully they will be able to share some wisdom from their own

experience. best regards, sherry z

You also have to consider the long term consequences of antibiotic

treatment. The more you are exposed to antibiotics the more likely

you might develop an infection with antibiotic resistant bacteria.

You have to be very careful about long term use of antibiotics. Not

to mention the destruction of the natural bacteria that is involved in

your digestive system. Your body needs them to function properly.

Please talk to your doctor about your concerns and way the pros and

cons to starting MTX or waiting until after you are done breastfeeding.
