Dear Diane

we had a Dx of Lupus, which turned out to be a dangerous misdiagnosis,

as Lyme turned out to be the true dx (which responded to treatment,

unlike the lupus treatment which initially made us feel great, but then

almost killed us). Lupus is a common misdiagnosis in Lyme Disease.

It is essential that if you or your child has Lyme Disease, that you DO

NOT take any steriods, which is the standard treatment for Lupus - this

is because it depresses the immune system (in Lupus in the immune system

is overactive and starts attacking your own body), which means that the

Lyme bacteria & co-infections can multiply and have a field day, thus

making the Lyme Disease much worse - it can have fatal implications in

the long run (although steriods in the short term will make you feel

like you have more energy, it will make you much much sicker in the long

term if you have Lyme Disease).

Also, one other thing - statistically Lupus in children is very rare (it

is more common in women than men, and in women of " child bearing age " ),

but Lyme Disease in children is much more common (because they are

outside more than adults and have a higher exposure to the ticks). I

guess based on that I would be very sceptical of a lupus diagnosis for a

child (even if they have a positive blood test), and would ask for a

Lyme Disease specialist (not an infectious diseases specialist) to give

a second opinion.

Good luck with your healing journey, whether it is from Lyme Disease or

Lupus.

Cheers

Nikki
