Knee Replacement

Most people post TKP have an area of numbness around the incision and

even to the outside of the knee, as those small superficial nerves had

to be cut to make the incision. It may or may not come back, but don't

expect it for several months, if at all.

Lateral is toward the outside......to right or left, away from the midline of the body. Medial is the opposite.....toward the midline. So on my left knee, with its incision down the middle, lateral is to the left of the incision, and medial is to the right of it. Anterior is, of course, toward the front from midline, and posterior is toward the back.

Susie

I have not had my TKR yet, but did have a broken leg in 1995 that

necessitated surgery and the 4 " scar was numb for several years.

Once they set the leg (with a steel rod) and put it in a removable

cast, it stopped hurting. The incision was sore for a few days and I

was weak (internal bleeding-had to get 2 units of blood)for about 10

days. The numbness lasted several years, though. I was only 46 at

the time, so sprang back pretty quickly.

Susie,

I have that same issue. Been over a year now since left knee

replacement. Skin still numb. And yes still some discomfort to

touch. Had a flare up of soft tissue inflammation a couple of months

ago. Took Motrin and helped a lot. The doc took e-rays just to

make me feel better to confirm nothing wrong with the bones and new

parts. All are in the right place.Bur still numb, doctor said may

or may not get feeling back. On of the issues that can happen with

any surgery.

Pardon my true ignorance, y, but " lateral side " ? " Medial side " ?

Three university degrees, and I was never taught those terms. Sorry.

When I played football, I used the lateral the ball, and I know that

one is not supposed to drive on the median in Washington State, but

that's all I know.

As either , , , or Ringo once said, " All I know is

that I know nothing. "

In my case, it's really true.

I could look lateral and medial up in my Funk & Wagnalls, but I

don't have one.. Besides, I'm too lazy.

Anatomically speaking: everything is referred to in relation to the

midline of the body, so, if you drew a line down through your body,

starting at the top of your head, through your nose, chin, navel (do

you have one, Stan?), and on down to between your feet, that is the

midline. Anything away from that line is "Lateral", anything towards

that line is "medial". So, looking down at your knee, the side away

from your body midline is your lateral side, the side of the knee

towards your body midline is your medial side. Comprende tu?

I'm sorry, Marilyn, but something is amiss.

I took off all my clothes, looked at myself in a full-length mirror,

but I saw no line going from my head to my crotch.

What's wrong with me? (You answer is optional.)

I anticpated your request long ago, Margaret. Look at the third

photo in the photos section under " Photos-S. " and you'll see a

partially bare-naked sif. There is even a straight line, more or

less, on the lateral overall, unicycle side of my body.

I aim to please.

Not bad Stan - certainly bigger than mine! (but size isn't everything...)

Now - how about a full median anterior?

I would only do that before European audiences, where I wouldn't get
