Guest guest
My Dr's. (family phys. and rheumatologist) told me that my Methotrexate is a pill form of chemo therapy. Wouldn't that make it a cancer fighter? I take 20 mg. a week, along with Simponi injections once a month. And one mg of folic acid every day accept the day I take the methotrexate. It helps with the pain, and slows the joint damage. ALL meds have side effects. I also take one mg of folic acid every day accept the day I take the methotrexate. It is a personal choice we must make as to how much pain and damage to our bodies we are willing to live with. I take the chance with the meds, because the aches, pain and burning are unbearable at times. Also because I have an Aunt who has this disease. She was never put on anything to help her, probably because there wasn't anything available years ago, and PsA was hardly heard of, if at all. Her body is deformed from shoulders to (and including) her feet. It is too late for her to get any help or relief. She is pitiful. I hopes this helps you or someone else. Guest guest
Thanks for your reply. I also thought that since methotrexate is a cancer fighter that it would inhibit the growth of cancer. But, then I also just received another email that stated that if I already had cancer (which I did- 4 yrs ago) that also because I have this auto-immune disease, it increases the risk for cancer to return....so.....where do I go from here? Guest guest
I went to the Dr. yesterday, and they are telling me to wait to see the Dermatologist before anything is done. I have an appt for the 18th of March, so it's not that much longer to wait. I've had a bladder infection that has now gone into my kidneys. They put me on Cipro for it, and sent me to the hospital for an in-depth urine analysis to see just what bug is getting me. It seems that 2011 is not a good year for me so far. Guest guest
Hi, Methotrexate, when used for psoriasis and PA, is a very low dose that won't kill cancer cells. That is why it really doesn't help prevent cancer. It carries a warning label that it may cause lymphoma- the problem is, psoriasis (and other autoimmune disorders) also have been linked to lymphoma so no one can be wholly sure if the treatment or the original disease is the cause. I'd be curious who is sending emails about your cancer risks - this is something that should be discussed with a doctor who knows your health history and can help you balance the risks of taking or not taking methotrexate. There are other drugs (Enbrel, Humira, etc) that may not " cause " cancer (again, can't be positive since autoimmune disorders could be the original source) that are unfortunately MUCH more expensive than methotrexate. Good luck! -
