Guest guest
Hey Jim. I am a type 1 diabetic (diagnosed when i was 39! darn immune system, anyway!) I developed PsA in 2006. Before PsA I had minor skin infections - once every three years or so. When I was diagnosed, i had severe plaque P. But I didn't have any infections associated with it. When I went onto Methotrexate, I started developing infections ANY TIME my dose went over 3 pills a week. These are mostly in my nail beds - fingers AND toes. The doctors are split on whether the infections are related to Ps or to Arthritis. I got antibiotics for them a couple of times. Mostly it was just soaking in Epsom salts and peroxide. It will probably take some time for your care team and you to figure out how you are reacting to meds, and when to be concerned about signs of infection. My rule of thumb is: If in doubt, call the Doc! I have NEVER been instructed to suspend my PsA meds because of an infection. As a person who takes imuno-suppresant meds, you should take pains to get flu shots, make sure your pneumo-vax is up to date. Beware of signs of infection. As a diabetic you should take pains to get flu shots and beware of signs of infection. As a person with BOTH, you should not wait to contact a physician if you have signs of infection (and your blood sugar will let you know, believe me!) Make sure that your dibetes care and your PsA care are coordinated. Ask which dr to contact if you get an infection. That is always my difficulty. Who to call! Rheumy is too busy to treat 'owies' Primary Care is scare to make changes or additions without consulting Rheumy. Yep, it is an interesting life! Guest guest
I have to make a correction here. Any one who is on immuno meds and HAS ANY TRANSPLANT MUST get permission from their transplant center to get any vaccines. You just can't assume it's safe to get them. I'm one in particular I have PSA, diabetes and had a kidney transplant at one time and was never allowed to get any vaccines without my doctors approval first.
