Worse Lyme fog could very well be his worse-before-better reaction to the IV

meds. It does not necessarily happen the first day -- can be several days

after, and can last a while. My kids tanked after they started IV Rocephin, but

they did get better. Also my younger daughter was getting a LOT worse in the

neuropsych department and started on Byron White drops (1 drop 2x/day) and is

already improving from brain fog. She did herx with that for a couple of days

-- joint pain and headaches -- just to let you know.

Subject: [ ] brain fog getting worse

My 11 year old son has been on IV zithromax (couldn't tolerate rocephin) for

a few weeks and has just started IM bicillin. HIs teacher just wrote me a

long email saying his brain fog was getting worse, not better. I will

discuss this at our next doctor's appt., but that's a week away and I wonder

if anyone has any experience with this?

His main Lyme symptoms are brain fog, and a severely compromised immune

system. I know about herx reactions, and he's had bad headaches with the

antibiotics which are much improved now. Is increasing brain fog part of a

herx reaction? On the other hand, maybe it is too long after the

antibiotics started for a herx? (I thought they started a few days after

your first dose).

Any experiences or guidance or wisdom would be much appreciated!

Yes, brain fog could be that 'gets-worse-before-gets-better' event.

How is he handling the IM Bicillin?  Do you ice before the shot and how many

shots/wk?

Best wishes,

Elaine

He's doing Ok with the bicillin. I assume you mean handing the discomfort? He

earns 2 hours of horrible video games for each shot, and he loves the games so

much that he willingly has them . . . (the games were banned while school is in

session, so this is a high value treat for him). No we are not icing, but he

does get anasthetic spray at the site first, and today (3rd shot) we are going

to try giving ibuprofen ahead of time.

It occurs to me that if it is a herx reaction, then the time frame fits with the

start of the bicillin, so maybe that is it. He's getting 2 shots/week.

It is so hard when it is your child -- any kind of problem or set back is so

stressful!

Thank you for your support and feedback --

Re Bicilin, I learned something counterintuitive -- you put in HEAT after the

shot and it helps disperse and cause less muscle ache.

Interesting.  A friend says to ice before and after.  I wonder if you ice

before, for pain of the shot, then heat after to spread the meds?

I think maybe so. We ended up using th lidocaine cream and ice before, and then

a heating pad after and it worked great.

Thanks for this -- we had a different nurse today and funnily enough she

said the same thing! We are going to bring a thermacare pad to the next

appointment.

Does he take any supplements to help with brain function? Kriill/fish oil,

Vitamin D3 and acetyl-l-carnitine are very helpful. There are also supplements

that my kids used to take that the naturopath prescribed that were for kids with

autism that helped although its been awhile so not sure what brand. I know my

husband and I notice a huge difference in brain function when we miss our

supplements for a couple days.

Yes, he is on a ton of supplements, for brain function and also to

strengthen his immune system which is very depressed (he was diagnosed with

shingles in December -- the pediatrician says she sees one case a year!).

I'd have to go downstairs to doublecheck all of them, but fish oil is

definitely one. Thank you.

Hi , they say juiced celery can help with brain fog (I don't know how many

video games that is worth) but it does seem to help me. It reduces the

inflammation in the brain and from what I understand brain fog is basically an

autoimmune response, inflammation, reacting to the bacteria. Does that make

sense? I add carrots and cucumber so it tastes better, but you could experitment

with apples or something sweeter. (Maybe not citrus with celery though, that

just makes it sour).
