Guest guest
Hi, I have had a copy of the new Lyme Diet book for a few weeks now, and I'm loving it, so I thought I'd write a review - here it is.... Cheers Nikki p.s. I apologise if you get this as a cross post The Lyme Diet Book. Nutritional Strategies for Healing from Lyme Disease. By Dr Nicola MdFadzean. ISBN:1-866-757-9953 I was very excited to see that the new Lyme Diet book was available. The first thing I need to say is that it is very readable, whilst also having lots of information at the same time. I found myself reaching for my highlighter pen a lot as I read, which is a good sign that the book is interesting and that there is new information not found elsewhere (which I find doesn't always happen with other Lyme Disease books). First up, Dr Nicola answers the question about why nutrition is so important in Lyme Disease Treatment quite well " I think of Lyme Disease treatment as having three pillars. The first it to kill the bugs; the second is to strenthen the " host " (that's you!); and the third is to eradicate any " stressors " on the body. " (page 14) The book is organised into 4 sections – the first explaining the science behind the Lyme Diet (which is the first time I've had it explained to me in such detail before – the suggestions make a lot more sense to me now). This section also has nutritional strategies for different symptom groups as well. The second section is " Putting it all together " , and has some really good suggestions about how to go about changing your diet (such as don't try and make lots of big changes all at once), as well as meal suggestions and a few recipes which are very easy to follow. The third section is " tools and resources " , which gives you other treatment options, as well as supplement guidelines and other resources. The final section is Appendices – with a list of glycemic indexed foods & a summary of Dr Nicola's basic supplement protocol (which she adapts to each individual patient depending on their symptoms/circumstances when she is treating them). By far the best part of this book is that it has nutritional strategies for particular symptom categories, such as intestinal problems, hormone problems, immune problems, inflammatory problems (such as joint pain, brain fog, fatigue, headaches etc), as well as information about making your diet alkaline, low oxalate or to help with detoxification. This means that you can mix and match what nutritional strategies work best for you & your symptoms. This is especially useful for Lyme Disease sufferers, as we all have different parts of our bodies that Lyme Disease has affected. I would have to highly recommend this book to anyone who is fighting Lyme Disease. I wish I had had this book over the last 10 years. We will definitely be using this book as we as a family go about recovering from Lyme Disease. I can't find anything negative to say about this book, except that some of the resources she suggests are not easily available in Australia (we are returning to there in June). Finally I need to say that I know Dr Nicola, and have been a patient of hers in the past & recommend people to go and be treated by her. I think she's one of the best LLMD's that I've come across (she's a ND) – so I do have some bias in reviewing this book, but I've tried to be as unbiased as possible. This book and " Insights Into Lyme Disease Treatment: 13 Lyme-Literate Health Care Practitioners Share Their Healing Strategies " are my current favorite Lyme Disease books - I keep them on my desk and refer to them often. I bought my copy of this book from Dr Nicola http://www.drnicola.com/56434/index.html but you can also buy it from Amazon (when they get stock) http://www.amazon.com/Lyme-Diet-Nutritional-Strategies-Healing/dp/0981978495/ref\ =sr_1_1?ie=UTF8 & s=books & qid=1271525254 & sr=8-1 You can also buy it here http://restormedicine.com/lyme-diet-book-by-dr-nicola/ and here (when they get stock) http://www.lymebook.com/lyme-diet-book-nicola-mcfadzean-nd About me - I'm a mum of two 15 year old twin girls, one who has Lyme Disease severely (she's in a wheelchair) and one who has it mildly, & my husband & I also have Lyme Disease (I used to be in a wheelchair and unable to walk, but am now almost at the point where I can consider going back to work after 10 years incapacitated & housebound). My daughters caught Lyme Disease from me through the placenta before they were born, and my husband caught Lyme Disease from me sexually. We are from Australia, and have come over here for a year to get Lyme Disease treatment (Lyme Disease is very rare in Australia). We have used conventional and alternative medicine as well as diet to treat our Lyme Disease, and it is working well for us.
