Guest guest
Hi, Sunflower,

I've had my thyroid problem for around ten or eleven years now. I think the only reason I had so many tests was a zealous endocrinologist. I used to have a yearly appointment with him but I gave up doing that. I had the first uptake test after I was initially diagnosed, the second after my cholesterol went up and my thyroid numbers down and the third when I was having a chronically sore feeling in my throat which I still get but think is muscular (I've given up with the doctors on that one). They were looking for cysts or other abnormalities that time. Nothing there, tho.

As to what they do - well, mine was not too good I think. He had sort of that condescending paternal thing going - I would take my list of questions and he would brush them off, with a " don't you worry. " Otherwise it was just adjust my meds according to what my numbers were. Oh, and nag me about my weight. He told me - walk an hour a day. So I do that (still). Great for the cholesterol but no weight loss. Next time I see him, he says - ok - do two hours a day! Actually, I likely do have the time - I'm not working right now. But it is so boring!

I think a good endocrinologist could be helpful - know more about how to interpret your numbers than a family doctor, maybe know what other blood tests should be run. But - I have yet to find any doctor who has been very helpful to me in living with this condition.

Sorry I wasn't more help!

Has anyone had a good experience with an endo that might shed some light on what makes them useful?

Marcia

Guest guest
I may have asked this some time ago, but this time our local somewhat-LLMD has suggested my 13 yo daughter see an endocrinologist. The couple he recommended won't see a young teen. I started down that path many months ago, but decided to focus only on aggressively treating the lyme & the related neuro-psych symptoms as well as her narcolepsy (we can only handle so many doctors at a time.) Does anyone have any suggestions for pediatric endos that might be open minded regarding neuro lyme in the PA/NJ/DE/NY areas? Some good news- though we have a long way to go, she is back in school most days after 7 months of homebound. Some days it still seems as nightmarish as ever, but there are more days where she seems almost well again (other than the 4 specialists she sees and half dozen daily medications, but it's all relative). Thanks for any suggestions, Sue

Can I request a specific endocrinologist by name through the NHS choose and book system, or can I only be referred to the hospital where the chosen endo practices? I was recently referred to my local hospital where I was diagnosed with CFS, and never got to see the consultant I expected too see, and saw the registrar instead. I want to avoid this happening a second time!!Thanks again, Jo I have sent you a list of recommended endocrinologists privately Jo, some are NHS some are private. I have had no recommendations for good endocrinologists from any of the hospitals you mention unfortunately, but see if there is somebody on the list you would like to see and then ask your GP to refer you to one of them. NHS doctors need a referral, private doctors usually don't. Luv - Sheila From: thyroid treatment [mailto:thyroid treatment ] On Behalf Of owen.joanne@... Sent: 06 January 2011 13:57 thyroid treatment Subject: Endocrinologists Hi, Thanks to Sheila and the tpa forum, I saw my gp today, and have been referred to an endocrinologist. My gp even suggested that I don't go to my local hospital where I have recently had tests, which resulted in a diagnosis of CFS, despite a rising TSH level, and a family history of autoimmune and thyroid illness. I live in the Greater Manchester area, and I have been given a list of hospitals to choose and book which are: North Manchester General Hospital, Chorley and South Ribble, Royal Bolton Hospital and Salford Royal. My questions are: Is there a thyroid specialist in my area? Can I ask for them in particular? Can I request a particular thyroid specialist even if they are out of my area? I can't currently access my other e-mail account where I was sent the list of doctors by Sheila. Please could it be re-sent? Many thanks to everyone, Jo

Guest guest
Yes you can, you are generally given a choice of consultants CLINICS not a particular consultant though. But if you have a word with the nurse when you get to your appointment the consultant will usually try to see you. Lillian, your GP is lying to you, thats not the way choose and book is supposed to work. Guest guest
Glynis, I do not think he was lying to me because I did choose a hospital and the hospital I chose told me I could not choose who I saw. I wanted a particular hospital and a particular surgeon to do the job. There were two surgeons at the hospital and I was definitely told on choose and book I could not choose my surgeon. Not only by my doctor but by the hospital as well. This was not the only time, it has happened before and it was the hospital as well as my doctor who told me this. It doesn't matter to my doctor which surgeon I see so I cannot see what point there would be for him lying to me. Guest guest
Lilian is correct. You can't do that through the Choose and Book System, but any other NHS appointment you can insist that you want to be seen by Dr ******* ONLY and that you do not wish to see his Senior Registrar or any other endocrinologist who happened to be on duty that day. Ask that they write on your Medical Notes that you will ONLY be seen by Dr ******and that you will not take up any appointments they make with any other doctor but him. This is what I insisted, and I see the same endocrinologist every time I go to the hospital. Patients have a voice, and we need to insist that it is listened to. Guest guest
From the NHS Choose and Book web site, http://www.chooseandbook.nhs.uk/patients/faqs/index_html#4 under " Can I choose which consultant I see? " it states - A patient has a legal right to be able to choose which hospital they are referred to for their first outpatient appointment, but not a legal right to specify which consultant they see. If it is thought that a specific consultant is the most clinically appropriate person to treat your condition, your GP/referrer can clearly indicate in the referral letter or refer you to a named consultant providing the hospital has made them available to be selected through Choose and Book. Otherwise, you will be referred to a department and may or may not be seen by that specific consultant.
