Guest guest
my daughter uses Seroquel. It works on the moods as well as the pain. However, if that's not an option our doctor has also used Abilify and Zoloft with kids. Psychotropic meds absolutely work on the Lyme mood things. Zoloft is good for anxiety in general and might help as it is used for OCD as well. My kids have had help from Cymbalta as well (and that works on the neuro pain too). I wouldn't rule out herbs too quickly. This is so tough. Definitely try the psych drugs. She recently had a midline put in for IV treatment of Rocephin because her rage attacks were out of control. She was like a wild animal. 3 days into treatment, she got a 6 inch blood clot which luckily we caught and are now treating with 2 injections daily of Lovenox. For a child who is already so anxious, and can't even stand in the bathroom by herself, you can just imagine how the shots are going. At the moment, we are not treating Lyme or Bartonella because I am nervous to use any herbs (which is what Dr. C primarily uses for treatment) because of their effect on the blood clot. We have met with a couple of Psychiatrists to try to find a psychotropic drug to help calm my daughter during this time and during treatment. One doc recommended Seroquel. Another Abilify. There is a strong history of Diabetes in the family so we quickly ruled out Seroquel. Her symptoms are rage, anger, hostility, anxiety, fear, OCD and motor and vocal tics. Has anyone had any luck with Psychotropic drugs with their children and if so, can you provide any guidance as to which drugs you have worked with? Thanks so much. I am treading water over here.... Guest guest
My daughter tried Seroquel -- though more for her severe insomnia than for her psych symptoms. It did help to even her out slightly but she then started having precocious breast development (and she was five). We did not have much success with psych meds prior to antibiotics -- she was on Zyprexa, which made the rages much much worse, and also tried Risperadol -- which had some mild positive effects but again worsened her raging and also seemed to cause her to lose fluids rapidly (through urinary incontinence -- not a known side effect, which puzzled the doctors). I think a lot depends on what's going on with the child, especially in relation to brain chemistry. During the height of her Lyme my daughter often had unusual responses to meds -- even with something like Benedryl, which should have made her sleepy, it would rev her up. Now she is on dexedrine to help with focus and while her dose should be out of her system by noon-ish or so, what actually happens is that we see it leave her system by late afternoon and dinner time, so things seem to remain in her system at lesser doses for much longer. Perhaps that was the problem for her with the psych meds -- her doctors tried increasing and that made things far worse rather than better. Sorry to hear about the rages -- I am surprised to find out how many more children seem to have them. In my daughter's situation, I had to physically restrain her or she would self-injure (biting herself or smashing her head into the floor). She was pretty much unable to leave the house. Treatment got rid of them -- the last one was four months into antibiotics. She never did receive IV -- only orals, and the rages went when she had sulfa added to her mepron/azith combo -- because our Lyme specialist suspected bart. But it is so challenging for a parent to deal with. > > my daughter uses Seroquel. It works on the moods as well as the pain. Guest guest
My daughter (and one of my other children, who is non-Lyme) have been on Abilify, Geodon, Seroquel (daughter only), Trazadone, Prozac, Klonipin, and Clonodine. Abilify - has been " my best friend " , for us, this has been the wonder drug for mood stabilization. Geodon - has been quite good, almost as good as Abilify, but with my daughter she became " immune " to it after a few months, which was when we made the change to Abilify. Geodon can also limit which abx can be taken with it. Seroquel - prescribed in November by my daughter's new LLMD. She only took it about a week, then went off of it. It left her feeling way too drugged and she didn't like it. Prozac - worked well, but wasn't enough by itself. We used it in conjuction with Abilify. Klonipin - worked well for anxiety in my son, however with my daughter she had a severe tremor that occurred when taking it (known side effect). My son still takes it when necessary for anxiety, however my daughter can't take it as the side effect is too severe. Clonodine - off label use as an anti-anxiety med, works on blood pressure, which in turn lowers anxiety. Didn't make a drastic difference. Trazadone - prescribed for sleep (off label use) for my daughter. Didn't even come close to making her sleepy, even at above the highest dose for an adult. Didn't affect her mood either. Guest guest
Effexor was what worked best for my son after trials on several other things that made him manic. Once he started Lyme treatment, it was 3 months and things got better. Then he started IV and many of those neurological mood problems have gone away. We also treat the ADHD and see a more stable kid with adderall. He was in a very dark place for about a year until diagnosis and treatment. I hope things get better for you! Guest guest
My daughter finds more benefit in taking Charcoal and /or Questran than she has with any psych drugs. She has been very sensitive to the toxins of the Lyme Disease, Bartonella, and Babesia. I also suspect she has secondary porphyria - because Tagamet usually calms her anxiety. My daughter also suffered from severe separation anxiety, but that has been gone for a couple of years. Don't stop treatment - it will get better. > > My daughter is 9 and has Lyme and Bartonella. Guest guest
So sorry to hear about all the difficulties your daughter is having. Didn't she have 6 weeks of IV in the fall that really helped her a lot? Did they have to pull the midline this time because of the clot? I'm sorry I don't have any advice or suggestions on psychotropic drugs. I just wanted to tell you to hang in there! I hope things turn around soon for you and your daughter!
