Guest guest
Hi, I could really use some help with giving Flagyl to my 10 year old. She can't swallow pills so at the recommendation of the dr. I opened the capsule and mixed the med with different things. It is so incredibly bitter. I've mixed it in a smoothie, apple sauce, and even honey. Nothing takes the bitter taste away and now she refuses to take it. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Guest guest
Try to teach her to swallow a pill, tell her to hold her breath when she puts it in her mouth and chase it down with juice or something other than water to drown the bitter taste. If she can't swallow it, try putting it in a spoonful of yogart or pudding then chase it with milk. The smaller substance you mix it with the better and quicker it goes down. good luck. Guest guest
My then 10 year old also had trouble with pills -- she found that if she chewed a bite of any sort of food, then stuck the pill into her mouth at the last minute and swallowed it went down with the food (gross imo but effective). The less time it spent in her mouth the greater the chance it would get down. Guest guest
Our pharmacist gave us a good idea for swallowing pills when our daughter was 10. He said to get an empty glass bottle of coke (or any brand of pop that has the long skinny neck on the bottle) Fill the bottle with water and then set the pill on the tongue and take a big swig of water from the bottle and swallow. The water carries the pill right down with out even noticing!! It was amazing because it worked. He said the mouth makes a shape around the neck of the bottle that makes the beverage flow in faster so it carries whatever is in the mouth down with out noticing. My daughter had trouble the first time because she sipped, but when she took a big swig and swallowed right away, down the pills went. Good luck. She has been ill since she was small and hated pills too, so we had to learn lots of tricks. I hope this helps. Guest guest
Go to the pharmacy and get gel caps small enough for daughter to swallow and large enough to accommodate the pill (or 2 halves). If pills have to be cut it in half have someone who can cut the pills and drop them into the gel caps. Person without pill on the fingers close the gel caps. Praying for your daughter's speedy recovery. Mine is doing GREAT! Jeanette In a message dated 7/23/2010 12:49:50 P.M.
