Guest guest
Yesterday we go for brain MRI, it was with AND without contrast. They give him IV contrast and as he is in the machine he starts throwing up all over the place, he was like Blair in the Exorcist. So...if they cant get the info they need from the MRI without contrast, we might need another spinal tap. I should have researched the gadolinium before he took it. they said 1% of patients have adverse reaction which means within 30 minutes of IV being administered. ..I guess he's that 1%. I really need a mental break or I'm gonna have a mental breakDOWN... LOL. The day before yesterday he had a pen stuck in his cast cause he broke his elbow, he had an itch. Went for brain MRI for the lyme meningitis and his arm kept getting pulled towards machine from the metal so had to reschedule for yesterday. we go to SB ortho. to get cast changed and the dr. said due to his stupidity and ignorance they are dismissing him as a patient and wont do any further treatment. 5 hrs. later I take him to Brookhaven hospital, I was so pissed, now he has a clear as day break right in the elbow besides the one in the growth plate. Did SB not see that on 3 different xrays or did it break in another spot cause he had no cast for 5 hrs. Now last night he tells me his chest hurts and his heart feels funny, I listened to his chest and heard an arrythmia. I'm losing it. Tomorrow back to opthalmology for eye test which didnt come out good 3 wks ago, something with the vision field or field vision, has to do with peripheral vision. then Tues. back to Neuro, then gotta make appt with ortho. for elbow, and thinking about a cardiologist now. Guest guest
Reading about the week you just had...oh my! Take a few deep breaths. I hope someone is helping you as you go through all of this terrible stress. I can appreciate how you must be feeling. There is nothing easy about dealing with sick children, and especially with Lyme. I remember when my twins were both on I.V., looking in the rear view mirror in the middle of rush hour traffic and seeing blood everywhere. I somehow pulled over and ascertained that they had been tussling over something and accidently pulled both their I.V.s loose! It's just amazing what you can deal with. I just proceeded to the trunk and got some alcohol wipes and tape, then called the home health nurse from a phone booth (This was years ago, before I had a cell phone). She met us somewhere and we got it all sorted. There was never a dull moment. I wonder how they missed those two breaks? Did someone read the first xrays wrong? I hope you can schedule a massage for yourself into your schedule somewhere! You'll look back on this and wonder how in the world you coped. Guest guest
Oh I definately would have lost it....its petty much just me, my husband is no help whatsoever. Now I have an appt with an ortho at 2:30 and opthalmology at 3:40. I guess they did read all 3 xrays wrong or as I said he got another break within the 5 hrs after they took the cast off before I went to other hospital. I have no freaking clue. I worry cause of the knee arthritis from the lyme, maybe he can get elbow arthritis ?? It is a joint right ? From: CarlaHS@... <CarlaHS@...> Subject: [ ] Re:I'm gonna have a mental breakdown soon.... Guest guest
Now today neuro said he needs another spinal tap, including a pressure test. I'm a nervous wreck about this. what complications can happen if any ? I dont like the fact of the propofol either, the stuff jackson died from. It took him a while to wake up last time, now with the arrythmia I heard I'm really, really scared... From: CarlaHS@... <CarlaHS@...> Subject: [ ] Re:I'm gonna have a mental breakdown soon.... Guest guest
I'm so sorry to hear all your son is going through. When my 11 year old son had his spinal tap done he was given Atavan ( I think I spelt that right) it just helped to relax him but kept him awake enough to cooperate for the test. Maybe you could ask about that instead of propofol. > > > From: CarlaHS@... <CarlaHS@...> > Subject: [ ] Re:I'm gonna have a mental breakdown soon.... > > Date: Monday, April 12, 2010, 10:57 AM > > > > Reading about the week you just had...oh my! Guest guest
Keep a careful eye with Atavan, the lasting side effects can be yucky. My son can't take it as it affects his balance and coordination. Guest guest
Propofol is supposed to be very safe. They administer it " to effect " , that is it acts immediately and when you stop administering it (iv drip or injection), you start to wake up. was using the anesthetic as a sleeping aid, getting it " dripped " iv to sleep, and stopped to wake up, which is pretty extreme. Ask the doctor if your son was administered anything else along with the propofol. Or just share your concerns with your doctor, he/ she may have an alternative solution. I've been following your posts and I am so sorry for this difficult time. Here's a hug... Guest guest
Side effects of Ativan include: <<<<< Drowsiness, dizziness, or unsteadiness may occur. If this medication is injected into a muscle, pain/burning/redness at the injection site may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: slow/shallow breathing, loss of consciousness, pain/swelling at injection site (if this drug is injected into a vein), seizures, blurred vision, mental/mood changes (e.g., hallucinations, agitation, confusion). Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: change in the amount of urine, shortness of breath, fast breathing, muscle weakness. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash,itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. >>>>> My son had the dizziness, unsteadiness for almost 24 hours after administration, pain and swelling at the injection site that took days to go away, and some blurred vision. He won't use Ativan again. He didn't like the way he felt and I wasn't happy with the length of time it took for the side effects to go away.
