Guest guest
Hi vancleave, You didn't mention if you have flatback syndrome or whether you've been to a specialist about this new pain? I had bad shoulder and neck pain prior to my recent revision surgery (Nov.), which would get so bad at times it would make me sick to my stomach. I went to massage therapy and physiotherapy weekly. My sister who has scoliosis (no fusion or rods) gets pain in her chest cavity (inflamation) which has been attributed to her arythmia and kyphosis, but I'm not a medical professional so it's really hard to say. I get pains in my sternum and ribs sometimes. Hope you can find something that makes you feel better. I had my spinal fusion surgery 17 years ago when I was 18, in Memphis. Just wondering if anyone experiences severe shoulder and arm pain daily. I have daily shoulder/neck pains and it often spreads. I have to put the over the counter menthol pain patches on my shoulders to get through the workday. Also, I will have a certain pain around my chest cavity. Just curious to see if anyone else has had these symptoms. Thanks Stay up-to-date with your friends through the Windows LiveT Spaces friends list. Check it out! Guest guest
Hi Vancleave, Welcome to the group. I haven't had any of the pains you are describing and I am not sure you have given us enough background to make any guess we might give your worth much... Over the years I have read other members stories of having their shoulder area become painful after the muscle/tissue around the rod starts to irritate it...sometimes the rod has moved because it is broken or dislodged somehow. If you are talking about arm pain as in nerve type pain, I have read of members who have had discs above their fusion become problematic or the area to become kyphotic (just because (?), or in conjuction with flatback/sagittal imbalance. I know of two members who have dealt with " frozen shoulder " , which as I understood it had nothing to do with scoliosis...but then, not every health problem we can have is scoli-related! It's not clear from your post if this is " everyday " ...as in since your original surgery or more recently. The bottom line is that if you are not already under the care of a adult spinal deformity doctor, preferably with some experience treating those of us in our later years (yuck, yuck) it is probably time to start looking for someone who can be helpful in figuring out what is going on with you. I hope some others will chime in here and maybe have some other ideas for you. Hang in there. Take Care, Cam
Guest guest
Hi all, I am really struggling at the moment with severe shoulder and arm pain. Does everyone with PA have the same problem. When my doc was trying to diagnose me he asked me which was the worst my feet my hands my knees or my arms or my neck. At the time I said my feet and went away thinking I should have said arms and shoulders. Since the PA has ravaged my body I have not been free of that overwhelming pain and lack of movement and strength in my shoulders and arms. I was given some physio exercises and just couldn't do most of them but tried and in too much pain afterwards to continue with the exercises. I have tried aromatherapy as best as I can reach and hot wheat bags. Soaking in the bath is almost impossible as I cannot get out of the bath, so I use a shower attachment and play it on my shoulders. As soon as I stop the pain is back. I have tried stretching too, its all so temporary and very painful. I feel like laying down but it just makes it worse. Getting dressed is hell, I am sorry just venting my frustrations. Any suggestions of how I can get some relief I am really worried that the lack of movement will result in no movement. I am on sulfalazine and as yet have had no change in my pain levels. Guest guest
, I frequently have shoulder pain, but not so bad as it used to be. At one time, it was so bad that I could not take off a t-shirt without help. Just couldn't move my arms and shoulder enough. Humira has greatly helped all of my PA including the shoulder pain, but it still interrupts my sleep many nights. After an hour or two of lying on one side, the pain in that shoulder wakes me and I have to turn to the other side, only to have that shoulder and hip waken me an hour or two later, etc. How long have you been on the sulfasalazine? If it has been at least a couple of months, I would call my rheumy and report that I still don't have anywhere near an acceptable level of relief and ask for a change of meds. Don't wait until your next appointment! best regards, sherry z
Guest guest
Hi -- thanks for your input. I have been on Ibuprofen and Tramadol since last September with very little relief. I went on MTX and Arava and had a bad reaction to both. I have been on Sulfalazine for four weeks. I have only had about ten days light relief Since last September from cortisone injections. But the last one had no effect. I just am finding I am desperate to wake up just one day without this pain. My doc and rheumy are very understanding and have gone through everything with me. I don't know what else I can do really except hope the Sulfalazine eventually kicks in or they will find me another drug to try. jenny
Guest guest
Before my cervical fusion I had told my neurologist who had done my spinal cord surgery the year before that I thought I had messed up my shoulder sleeping wrong for so long because of the spinal cord surgery. I couldn't left my arm because of the excruciating pain in my shoulder. I drove with only my right hand because it hurt to lift my left hand. They did a MRI and my C5 was totally blown...so YES a herniated disk can feel like a rotator cuff or shoulder problem. I hope yours is just bulging and not herniated. Good luck!! Barb > > I am experiencing pain on top of my shoulder. I have 3 cervical discs that are bulging. Could this cause pain on top of my shoulder? It started > out as pain throughout my whole shoulder. I put damp heat on it for days and now the pain is isolated to just the top of my shoulder. It pains to move my arm towards my body. I've been in pain for a week. I see the Dr. Next week. > > Could all of this be attributed to my neck injury? > > Ellen >
