Guest guest
My daughter hasn't had any problems taking Rifampin. She is taking 300mg 2x day. (Of course this is the same child that didn't have any reaction to Mepron, and had no problem with Bicillian injections 1 each side, 2x week.) I guess she's just odd. ) Charlotte iamwhimsy@... http://whimsy.t35.com Re: [ ] child starting rifampin My daughter who herxes very bad is starting rifampin for the first time for bart......any experiences or help you could give me? thanks - love you all!! Guest guest
Diane, about missing sixth grade --we had that happen too and my one daughter is back in school this year with a modified, late start schedule but my older one is out of school for second straight year (though feeling better -- just not well enough to go to school). Just to say, it's so different for everyone. LLMD ought to be ble to make a guess. Ours told us at the end of 6th grade that she would be great by the end of eighth and that looksl ike she's on track. Two years seemed unimaginable and yet, with PICC and meds and everything, we look like we may be on track. She's actually dreaming of dancing and playing volleyball again. Now THAT'S progress... (for today -- we take 'em as they come) ________________________________ From: CT <iamwhimsy@...> Sent: Thu, February 3, 2011 7:11:28 AM Subject: Re: [ ] child starting rifampin My daughter hasn't had any problems taking Rifampin. Guest guest
Hi Diane My 13yo daughter has been taking Rifampin for 3 months now. She had stopped herxing on her previous antibiotics and once she started the Rifampin she began herxing again. Sometimes she feels pretty bad but the hot baths, drinking lots of water and heat packs help. I'll be praying for your daughter - it's always a time of great anxiety when we have to switch meds. Hang in there. * ´¨) ¸.• ´¸.•* ´¨)¸. •*¨) (¸.•´ (¸ ;. •´ Tricia ________________________________ From: Diane Biel <dkbmama@...> Sent: Thu, February 3, 2011 10:04:14 AM Subject: Re: [ ] child starting rifampin My daughter who herxes very bad is starting rifampin for the first time for bart......any experiences or help you could give me? thanks - love you all!! Guest guest
The first time my daughter tried Rifampin she got very tired, and so the doctor switched to Cipro and Bactrim. The 2nd time she had a reaction after the 2nd dose within a half hour. She suddenly got very nauseous and I believe had a shooting pain in her arm. (This was the same pain she had when she was allergic to the IV Claforan). The doctor discontinued it and went back to the Cipro and Bactrim which had worked in the past. Good luck. I know many who Rifampin has really helped. Guest guest
On all other antibiotics, initially, my daughter experienced often dramatic herxing (azith, amoxi, sulfa, ceftin, omnicef, tini). However, Rifampin was the one med that did not seem to cause any noticeable herxing---probably because it only targets the Bart and doesn't address Lyme particularly. She was on azithromycin to keep the Lyme in check, but by the time she was on it, her herxing was fairly manageable and predictable (monthly flares mostly). Rifampin did seem to make her sleepy and gave her some unusually vivid dreams. Also, found that it made her appetite diminish a bit. We also dealt with the koolaid orange urine, so had to prepare her daycare people and kindergarten teacher, so they wouldn't panic if they happened to help her out in the bathroom. The other thing that the rifampin seemed to provoke were many of the bart rashes -- she developed the stretch mark variety on her torso and also had clear bubbles show up on her face -- looked a bit like teenage acne, except she was five! After the rifampin treatment her rashes have vanished completely as well as many of the bart symptoms (sore soles of her feet, rages -- mostly -- still has some mood volatility, so I do wonder if bart may still be mildly in the picture, though the majority of her current symptoms are pretty typical neurolyme). So, my experience was that rifampin has been one of the 'easier' medications for daughter.
