B-12 deficiency

I too am severely B-12 deficient (along with iron and vitamin D deficiency). I

wanted to say that my hematologist stated that recent research she had been

keeping up with suggested that B-12 supplements work as well as the injections.

The concentration is so high in the supplements (one tablet has like 1600

percent of the RDA) that even when you do not produce enough intrinsic factor

(needed for B-12 absorption) that most can do the supplements without having to

deal with the injections. I started the supplements and a month later my B-12

numbers were out of the toilet and where they needed to be.

Anyway, I wanted to share that, as it may be an option for some. I know that a

$10 bottle of OTC supplements that will last me 4 months taking one a day is

better for me than a $60 copay to have an injection, I don't have to go in

monthly for a B-12 injection, and my rheumatologist checks my levels with the

rest of the blood draws on my checkup visits when I go in every 6-12 weeks

(depending on how I am doing PsA-wise).

You can't give your own B12 injection? My doctor prescribed it for me and I

already have the syringes for the MTX...so I give my own B12 shots and only pay

for the medication and the syringes..which my insurance covers. I had gastric

bypass and was not absorbing the MTX pills OR the B12 I was taking...thus the

injections of both meds and I have been doing pretty good. I am pleased anyway.

I haven't been able to take biologics so was put back on the MTX and it is

helping a lot...not perfect but better than nothing! Well, really better than

nothing!
