,

I do most of my lap swimming on my back so as to not over stress the

upper back and neck with twisting. What I really like is working

vertically in the deep end with an aquajogger. Unfortunately there is

only one company that makes a smaller home unit that is deep enough

for that kind or workout.

I really think I would be best off with just a hot tub. Cam

All of the positive posts about water therapy are starting to motivate

me to use my Y membership more. For those of you that have had revision

surgery, how soon did you start this after surgery? Dr. Rand has warned

me " not to design my own pt " and that he really doesn't want me doing

much of anything other than walking yet.

It seems that patients of Dr. Bridwell go home with a " plan " and more

direction of what to do and what to expect than patients of other

doctors including Rand. Am I correct, that he put you right into a PT

program? Have others gone right to PT?

Cam, I have thought about that as well! A large enought hot tub to

march around in a small circle. I think all our doctors should write us

a perscription for one and have the insurance companies pay for them. I

think we would all feel alot better!! Thersa

Hi Ann: While I was on the rehab floor in hospital after revision (April, 04), I was taught several leg exercises, and standing exercises, which I continued at home. Dr. LaGrone gave me walking goals immediately, and did not want me to go for PT....just continue what I had learned on rehab floor. Several months later, he said to add light arm weights, and stomach crunches. He did say walking in pool would be good (I think maybe at 3 months post op), and leg exercises in pool also. I'm actually thinking of finding a nearby pool, but in the meantime, I continue to do all these exercises, as well as trying to walk several miles.

Thanks to all who posted their stories. It's great to have this Forum. Thanks to Cam, Ann and for all your hard work to moderate this.

Enjoy your day. etteae_mcd2003 <ae_mcd2003@...> wrote:

Cam, I've been drooling over those Endless Pools for years. If money were no object I would have one, though I admit I haven't yet tried one, and would want to do so before spending the money.

Re: [ ] Re: Water Therapy

Hi Cam, I have found that swimming puts a strain on my neck and it begins to hurt after a while. It is much easier for me to walk, or rest my upper body on a float and kick around for a while. There are a lot of exercises I can do that work better for me than actually swimming.

You may want to take a couple of test runs in the community pool, if you haven't already to see what works best for you.

cammaltby <cammaltby@...> wrote:

,I am sure you know this but others may not. The beauty of the water temp to sweat ratio is one reason why it is such a desirable activity. Because the water temp in the average pool is around 80deg it keeps your body cool while working at a higher heart rate...so it never feels like you are working as hard as you actually are...cardiovacularly speaking.I believe that prepping for the rigors of one or two long surgeries by doing all you can to see that your heart and lungs are in good shape is very improtant...you will not be sorry you spent the time.Speaking of pools...my husband and I did start kicking around the idea of putting in a small pool with the "endless" feature so you can swim in place. I am torn because what I really think makes more sense is a hot tub with a good jet system for the back...and I can just take myself down to the community pool to work out. If anyone has any experience with any swim or spa systems I would love to hear input.Cam

Cam, Sharon,

I, too, am a swimmer, and have always wanted one of those pools. Only recently have I learned how expensive they are. I even have a framed prescription from my doctor ordering me a pool!

Cam,

I believe that you live in my favorite place! Doesn't the ocean help, at least in this weather? Salt helps with buoyancy, right?

Carole,

Yes, I live out on the Island of fog and sunshine! The salt water

does help with bouyancy. This past weekend I braved the sourth shore

with breaking waves and had a couple of very nice swims. Of course,

once I was in the water facing a pretty good sized wave coming at me

I was questioning the wisdom of going in...getting " boiled " at this

stage of healing would not be a good thing! Anyway..I braced for

impact...rode it out and only learned that I probably need to assess

a little more carefully before I tread in deep.

And you are right, there is always a cooling breeze here...although

this week we had what I call " hot fog " and it was nasty!

Take Care, Cam

The only kind of ab crunch I can do is on an upright Nautilus ab machine. I

don't even know if they are commonly available at clubs lately; I use a

friend's private gym. But sit-ups, etc. are painful for me, so it's obvious

I shouldn't do them.

The only hitch to the Nautilus machine is that it's hard for me to get into,

since I can't arch my lumbar spine.

BTW, I love what swimming does for my abs.

Hi ,

Water therapy was great for me. Prior to my surgery I was going to

P/T. And the last half was spent in the pool. They would have me strap

on this foam thing around my mid section and then I would jog in the

deep water. After that I would walk in the section I could touch

bottom on. I liked the water jogging the best. The walking tended to

be more painful for me. Which I thought was strange.

I look forward to water jogging again. I have to wait a month before I

can go back to P/T and I hope that I can get back in the water.

In the past when I wasn't doing the P/T, yet still wanted to use the

pool I was able to get a punch card for 30$ for 15 punches. That was

only 2$ a visit which was less than our cities aquatic center.

Do you have a city pool? Or some P/T places have pools. One of our

hospitals have a pool. Something closer so that you don't have to

drive so far to use a pool.

I am a big believer in the water therapy. Even if it doesn't fix the

problem it will help strengthen the muscles.

water therapy was the best type of PT for me. I loved it. Probably the

only time that my pain levels go down drasticaly is when im in the pool. Im

not sure if the 40 min drive each way is worth it though; it might hurt to

much or undo everything you just accomplished depending on how painful it is

for you to sit for long periods of time. I definately recommend trying it.

Id put a pool in my backyard if i could afford it! :)

good luck

Water is the best therapy for anyone with back leg arm and neck injuries. In my opinion anyways I have always had the best results coming out of the water when I was hurting real bad. This was all before my surgeries now my doctor is telling me that it is an awsome way to break up massive scar tissue as well. That is what I am dealing with right now. Anyways water worked wonders for me my mother in law my best friend my mom and my stepdad so I would say go for it if you can handle the drive

Great, thanks everyone for your opinions. I am going to try to go in

the water this week. I just hope that driving down there doesn't

reverse everything the water does.

So, this may be silly, but once I get in there what do I do then?

Just wade? I am certainly not going to do laps! HAHAH Some

strectching maybe? Any tips would be great!!

Again, thanks everyone for your advice!!!

I didn't get to go that much but i remember we held water weights and walked

around alot. they had a lot of aquatic aides for sale; like the weights.

maybe try a sporting goods store for ideas.

go down to your local dicount store or walmart get the water weights and the swimming noodles they are long and made of some sort of floating device this is great for you to stay up in the water and do your stretching I will give you instuctions if you would like on the things that I do in the water with these items. It is very important that you try and work on your abs to protect you lower back and the only thing that can do that is the water without causing you excrutiating pain. Let me know if you invest in these things and I will tell you some exersises to do also if you jog in place in the water that is real good too. leg lifts and knee crunches are real good. just let me know girl k and I will do what I can to help. I hope that you are doing well otherwise

Loves and prayers coming your way
