Louise's bit about wearing the known sensitizers away from the skin

reminded me of a doo-dad (scientific term :-) that I read about in a

perfumery book. It's called a cassoulet, and they were popular a hundred or

so years ago. Today, a casssoulet (or cassoulette?) means a dish that a

cassarole is cooked in, but then it meant a small, or tiny pierced metal

object that a perfumed piece could be placed in.

IIRC, from the book, that perfumed piece could be a dab of unguent, a

smattering of an absolute or concrete, or perhaps a little cloth soaked in

an essence, like Louise said.

Small ones could reside on a table, gently wafting out the scent, and tiny

ones could be a piece of jewelry, like a pin, or locket, or ring.

I've done web searches for them, but all I come up with are cassarole

dishes, LOL.

One of the pieces of jewelry that my mom left me was a tiny cloisonne

vial- almost egg-shaped, yellow enamel with a tiny flower like a violet in

the enamel..there is a tiny dauber, and the egg is hollow, and would hold

oils well. It is fastened to a ring with 3 tiny chain, and the dauber is

fastened with another tiny chain. I have not yet put anything in it (the old

material no longer has any scent, but I think it will need to be cleaned

out..) and I need to figure out the best safe way to fasten it to the

clothing. But it is so lovely and I know it is older than the 50's, because

while she had it, I never saw her wear it or use it. Such a mystery..

As far as the use of a cassoulet- I have envisioned a valentine shaped

holder as a pin. But a locket would be good as well.

I worked quite a bit before I came up with an acceptable material. Cotton

shirts are acceptable in and of themselves, but get VERY stained. Cotton

handkerchiefs, linen handkerchiefs- just don't smell right. But those cotton

squares work very well indeed. Cotton balls might work if they were indeed

the old style cotton- but I don't think the new synthetics would be

acceptable.

There is some material just coming on the market made from corn; which

can be recycled once it is worn out- can go right in your compost. I wonder

what its absorption and adsorption characteristics are. Also hemp- never

have tried that. Hmm. I do have some hemp fiber thread. I could just try a

drop on that. Good thought for an experiment. I will get back to you. (OT- I

used to do handweaving and still have my loom. Has anyone used hemp as one

would use linen?)

Subject: Question about hiatal hernia....

I wonder if having a hiatal hernia can cause band slippage? I went

back to my WLS doc today because of persistent acid reflux nightly

and he did fluoro on me and I drank some barium and he removed 1.5

cc now my fill is at 1 cc. He said it was a " generous " pouch and

not draining properly and that I was on the verge of having a

prolapsed pouch, not there yet, so he was hoping removing some of

the saline would help this.

Anyone else had this trouble and did it help to remove the saline? I

sure don't want to have to go back in for surgery again to fix it.

If any of you have had a slippage fixed I would love to hear from

you and to know if Insurance will pay for it again?

>>>> Yes. I did have a hiatal hernia that they 'missed' during the first

opertation. Yes. I do feel that they are correlated somehow. I also had the

'generous' pouch. I was rebanded and the hiatal hernia was fixed during the

second operation. Jessie Ahroni says she believes they are correlated also.

I'll be interested in seeing studies down the road as I am hearing this over and

over about hiatal hernia/slippage/pouch dilation. My insurance did pay for my

second banding, although all insurances are not the same. I wish you luck and I

hope you don't have to do any of these things.

Many of us had hiatal hernias, since they are common with obesity.

most are repaired along with the orignal band surgery. Not sure how

you would miss one if it was there.

>>>>Me either, but my first doctor did. The second said it wasn't real evident

until he started manipulating the band, then he seen that the hernia was very

lax above where he was moving the band, so he had to stop the OP to repair the

hernia. I had had this hernia since my first pregnancy in 1981, confirmed by EDG

in 1983. I asked my first surgeon did he repair it and he said he didn't see

anything. DUH.. so now it's cost me another surgery and slowed my weight loss

progress down substantially.<<<<<

having reflux before banding is

a sure sign of a hernia.

A dilated pouch is often the same as a small slip, and some fix

themselves with an unfill and rest period. Be sure not to eat more

than a cup of solid food, so the pouch has a chance to shrink back to

a good size. Lots of them do, so keep the faith and eat carefully.

If your original sugery paid for the band, it should also cover any

neeeded repairs. Good luck with all this - Sandy R

Do you have blood sugar issues? I get a woozy feeling, or a tunnel-like feeling sometimes. That being said, however, I also have migraines, occular migraines, diabetes, vision problems, and lots more. You might want to have your blood glucose and cholesterol checked. Also, you may want to review your medications with your doctor.

Good luck,

Tammy
