Guest guest
I was wondering if anyone here has had a cortisol stimulation test? My husband is suppose to have this test next week because his blood test showed low cortisol. The Endo DR. doesnt want to put him on hydrocortisone for long term until she does this test. The pharmacist told me that this is a rare test & isnt done often. Which kinda made me nervous. If anyone has had this done or knows about this i would appreciate any info. Thanks, Mysticgrl
Guest guest
It might be a rare test cause it probably cost abit more than the usuall tests and require abit more time since you have to monitor (or atleast have the patient return) at 30 min and one hour after injection. Its not a risky or scary test so you have nothing to worry about. I imagine that a possible sideeffect of the test would be to feel alittle worse for a few days if one suffers from weak adrenals as they are stressed by the testing procedure (hence stress test). I did it and actually felt better for a half a day and then alittle worse for a few days after test. The result and possible treatment that will lead to an increased lifequality is what you should be focused on. The test is just on this path and nothing to worry about. Guest guest
My Dr. would not do this test said it can make one dam sick if his levels are low and he dose this test it can take the Thyroid hormone that is builing up in his blood and dump it all into his cells and make him feel like he is having a heart attack. This is why people that need HC have to start on it low and work up to the supporting does. Here is how one starts on HC to avoid a thyroid dump. You see you need Cortisol to carry the thyroid hormone out of the blood into the cells so doing this test adding Cortisol can cause a Thyroid Dump. The following is from this link. http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/adrenal-info/how-to-treat/ My Dr. ordered a 4x's in a day Saliva Cortisol test and when this come in low he ordered a ACTH Stim.test. To see is I am Secondary and I am. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACTH_stimulation_test ================================================== Day 1-3: 2.5 mg first thing in the AM (2.5 mg total) Day 4-6: 2.5 mg first thing, 2.5 mg in four hours (5 mg total) Day 7-9: 2.5 mg first thing; 2.5 mg in four hours; 2.5 mg in four hours (7 1/2 mg total) Day 10-12: 5 mg first thing; 2.5 mg in four hours; 2.5 mg in four hours (10 mg total) Day 13-16: 5 mg first thing; 5 mg in four hours; 2.5 mg in four hours; 2.5 mg bedtime (15 mg total) Day 17-20: 10 mg first thing; 5 mg in four hours; 2.5 mg in four hours; Bedtime 2.5 mg (20 mg total) Co-Moderator Phil > From: mysticgrl77 <mystic_pizza7@...> > Subject: Ques,,,Cortisol stimulation test > > Date: Friday, February 12, 2010, 11:13 AM > I was wondering if anyone here has > had a cortisol stimulation test? Guest guest
Mysticgrl, I've had a cortisol stimulation test, maybe twice, and think the proprietary name of the one I had was a Cortrosyn test. Blood was supposed to be drawn a 8am, and again an hour or two later, but they didn't get to the first drawing until about 9:40 (slow in starting the office routine)--and thus there are doubts about the accuracy of the test, which showed a tendency toward abnormal levels. I can't remember if it was part of this test, or a separate one, but I was also told to carry a plastic jug around with me and collect all urine for 24 hours. I'm surprised the druggist called this test " rare. " Maybe few of his patients have hormone problems. On the other hand, I'm not sure a druggist would have any role in this test, since the doctor probably gets the medications he needs from the test direct... If you have a BArnes & Noble or other good bookstore near you--or better yet, a medical school bookstore or library--go to the books on diagnostic tests and read up on this test. Or you could call a med school reference librarian and ask her to copy a page on this and fax it to you; most librarians are very helpful with the public. ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ > > I was wondering if anyone here has had a cortisol stimulation test?
