No, low thyroid causes high cholesterol.

http://thyroid.about.com/cs/symptomsproblems/a/cholesterol.htm

" As many as ten million Americans with high cholesterol levels may not know that

their cholesterol is elevated due to undiagnosed thyroid problems. High

cholesterol affects an estimated 98 million people, half the American

population, and is a major contributor to heart disease, America's number one

killer. But the most commonly known cholesterol raisers -- diet or insufficient

exercise - are not necessarily the problem for everyone. "

Low cholesterol can cause low T, because T is made from cholesterol.

I would insist on thyroid labs: Free T3, Free T4, reverse T3, TSH.

diet and exercise aren't helping enough. I was curious though if having low T

low thyroid also causes low cholesterol as well.

I seen this from a Dr.

High Cholesterol Causes Low Testosterone

Gabe Mirkin, M.D.

Men with high blood pressure have low blood levels of the male hormone,

testosterone, and make love much less often than men with normal blood pressure,

according to a study from Italy.

How can this be? The male hormone, testosterone, was thought to raise

cholesterol, stiffen arteries, and increase risk for heart attacks. But this

applied only to the methyl testosterone taken by athletes, not the testosterone

produced by the body.

Having high cholesterol, pre-diabetes or high blood pressure causes hardening of

the arteries, which decreases blood flow to the testicles to damage the

testicles and lower testosterone. High blood pressure and high cholesterol lower

testosterone, so men with low testosterone are at increased risk for heart

attacks. That means that every impotent man should have blood tests for

cholesterol and diabetes, the two leading causes of heart attacks as well as

impotence. The tests your doctor should order include HBA1C, lipid panel,

C-Reactive Protein (CRP), homocysteine, Lp(a), prolactin and testosterone. By

the time a man has low levels of testosterone, he may already have significant

arteriosclerosis. More on Testosterone gel

I am not a Dr. and I have a problem with this study.

(Corona and colleagues evaluated 3,484 men, average age 51, who visited an

outpatient clinic at the University of Florence with complaints of sexual

dysfunction between January 2002 and August 2009.)

Most men that have sexual dysfunction all ready have low Testosterone.

This link is one of many I have read when I was put on Statins after having

Heart Bypass Surgery. For every bad study about them there is good ones. Who

do you believe.

There is faulty logic here confusing cause with correlation. This is similar to

the link between cholesterol and heart disease. High cholesterol is correlated

with heart disease, but is not the cause. Low thyroid is the cause. You raise

the thyroid levels, the cholesterol levels come down. Inverse relationship.

Here, they are saying " High blood pressure and high cholesterol lower

testosterone, so men with low testosterone are at increased risk for heart

attacks. " Again, high BP and high cholesterol may be correlated with low

testosterone, but low testosterone is not the cause of heart disease, except

indirectly as it relates to thyroid, since testosterone helps the inactive T4

thyroid hormone convert to the active T3 hormone.

It may also be that the group of men with these symptoms of high BP, high

cholesterol, and low testosterone all have some pituitary damage, resulting in

the low hormones levels. After a discussion here about being hit on the head, I

asked hubby about it, and sure enough, yeah, he was knocked out a couple of

times. This has got to be more common with men than woman!

It is sure something to think about I never had high cholesterol in my life and

been doing labs every 8 weeks for the last 28 yrs. Yet I had to blockages going

to my heart 99% blocked off. So I ask the Heart Dr. how could this be. I don't

feel they know when I first got sick I was gritting my teeth so bad I got gum

infections one after the other. I read just the other day this can cause

blockages in your heart or to your heart. The Dr. did say my Blockages were

very old been there a long time and could not understand how I lived. Then

there is the low levels of hormones I have had over the last 28 yrs main one

Growth Hormone heart Dr. says this could have done this.

I have low levels of Cortisol, Thyroid and Growth Hormone for 23 yrs. Dr.'s

kept telling me I am OK in the normal range.

Until we figured out I am Hypopituitary do to a head injury from an Auto

Accident some 29 yrs ago.

My Wifes best friends Brother In Law had Heart Bypass sugary last yr about 13

months ago. He had to go back into the hosp. last week he had scare tissue

build up at the Bypass and a new blockage.

The fixed him without having to open his chest again he is lucky. I hate

hearing this it's hard to live with the worry of this.

An ole saying in statistics " correlation does not mean causation. "   Correlation

and regression analyses are distinst mathematical processes.  In the former one

takes " what nature has to offer "   In the latter one manipulates the independent

variable to determine if it has an effect upon the dependent variable.

Regression is a very robust procedure.

I'm going to sound like a broken record, but grinding your teeth and gum disease

are also a sign of low thyroid. I've been switching up doses here between no

Armour and starting Erfa etc. and my gums got inflamed, but as soon as I raised

the dose, it went away.

I know there are studies that say gum disease causes heart problems, but again,

that is correlation not cause. Cause is again low thyroid.

Has anyone checked his thyroid levels? If they haven't fixed the cause, the

symptom (new blockages) will continue. Unfortunately, multiple surgeries is far

too common.

I guess I should have said I was a mod at STTM forums when they were up. Now I

am a mod at

http://forums.realthyroidhelp.com/viewforum.php?f=5 & sid=5824ee62823b23f6d08584d9\

for men's only thyroid.

I just stopped taking Armour meds when I went on Growth Hormone my Thyroid went

Hyper started working again. Then I had to stop the GH dose was to high stoping

this my TSH went up to 5 stopped working. On GH my TSH was 1.5 FT3 was past min

rage but FT4 was at the bottom of the range.

So I asked for Synthroid 250mcgs because I was going back on GH I feel OK but

labs were just done on this 8 week yesterday and in 2 weeks we will see how my

levels are.

I am telling you I have talked a lot of people that went hyper on to much Armour

but until you go through this your self. It was hell.

So your into Statistics it's been a time that I have seen this one I am retired

from Chry. I worked in Gage Process an Engineer for manufacturing. I was one of

the first to learn about Statistical process control (SPC) there and Applying it

to Gaging parts.

Before TRT(7/09)my cholesterol numbers all were bad. I started Tcypionate 2/10.

Just got my cholesterol tested. All numbers have improved considerably.

This leads me to believe that TRT has improved my cholesterol.

Thanks for the replies. My thyroid has been checked numerous times over the

years and results have always come back normal. High cholesterol runs in my

family and I've been on statins for the last few years. Even on the statins my

cholesterol numbers have still not been the greatest that is why I was wondering

if having low T is making my cholesterol worse. I am planning on starting TRT

soon so it will be interesting to see if my cholesterol numbers improve over

time. I will continue on the statins for the time being.

*normal* is a setting on the dryer :: grin ::, why not add Free T3 and Free T4

to your next blood tests for thyroid, post the lab results and the lab ranges

and ask for comment--most docs do the wrong tests and thus, get the wrong

conclusions :)
