The moment I saw the explosion I knew it was hydrogen gas that had built up from

the superheated reactor. What surprised me was a system was not in place to vent

outside and filter the air also. Three Mile reactor had to vent gas build up and

also some low level radiation as well. Of course we all know that the explosion

at Chernobyl was mostly hydrogen, accept it was so powerful that it lifted the

100 ton reactor lid and then tossed some of the reactor fuel out also. This may

seem like extreme science but in reality the science is straight forward.

The one difference in reactors in the United States and the rest of the world is

the concrete dome that is placed around the whole reactor. Why in the world

would any one build four reactors on the water edge in an area with a history of

extreme earthquake activity and not dome them? Why would some build that many

reactors and not cross link redundant systems.

Hannah, I have a question that is off the topic a bit. I take it you have some

background in nuclear power design. I studied a little engineering. Would you

be open to a personal email with a few questions about this nuclear issue?

I don't know much but I do know the new designs are full proof.

I am an advocate of nuclear energy as a supplement to renewable sources

where necessary. If you calculate the full price of carbon sources, which

includes military spending ($7 BBL for every BBL which has left the Middle

East, even before these expensive wars), pollution, cleanup, global warming,

healthcare costs... it actually turns out that there are many forms which

are cheaper than oil or coal. We just focus on the commodity price, instead

of the true cost to make a comparison.

However, I disagree with anyone who believes that any technology as complex

as a nuclear power plant cannot fail. There is always risk.
