Guest guest
Sounds like a great start to the new year! Out of curiosity was the sunrise expected at the same time at 1000 ft. closer to sea level? I used some broad sweeping assumptions in playing around with that little math problem. I enjoyed the exercise, though. Simple minds, simple pleasures. Well toast right back at you and everybody here, let's make this a better year! -dz- --- Dennis <dhuber@...> wrote: > We made it! Guest guest
Hi Dave What did you assume? I thought maybe 15 to 30 minutes but it turned out to be about 4 minutes (my time sources were not real accurate also). It came up a ball of fire and surprisingly fast - I was scurrying around with the camera. I will talk to the astronomy teacher at school about this when I see him. It was interesting that just as the sun was clearing the horizon there was kind of a puddle of red/yellow under it. I deducted it was the reflection off the ocean, which we can't see due to the distance and low angle, but is within the sight line. It is about 18-20 miles. I'll bet if I had a powerful scope I could see sailboats in the summer. This is neat stuff for the mind - my mind anyway. Dennis Re: [ ] Sunrise > Sounds like a great start to the new year! Guest guest
Hi Diane Good to hear from you. We to spent a quiet night at home to bring in the new year. It's much safer than trying to go out anywhere, besides I did enough of that in my younger days to last the rest of my life. Guest guest
Glad you had a nice New Year's. I think Jan must be recuperating from raising Cain in Texas, and I'm not talking about sugar cane either! -dz- --- diane214@... wrote: > HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!! > > I am wishing for a Healthy and Happy New Year to us > all.... Guest guest
Well, I was assuming that the point of the horizon would move out 1 foot for every foot of elevation you gained. I also assumed that the horizon you base the normal sunrise time on is not obstructed by that mountain or anything else. We do get to see the sunrise over Lake Michigan, too. And if I go up the peninsula about 40 miles we can see it set over Green Bay (the bay, not the city). I think you may see some sunlight shining through the water also, right at the edge (of the world?). Anyway, it's one experience I never tire of. Up in Peninsula Park I have enjoyed many sunsets with sailboats around and fishermen, lots of birds, they seem to get very excited when the sun is going down also. -dz- --- Dennis <dhuber@...> wrote: > Hi Dave > > What did you assume?
