Guest guest
We talked about this as far as I know DHEA has nothing to do with Cortisol going down it's the Cortisol going down that has an effect on DHEA. What carries the Thyroid into the cells is Cortisol. Guest guest
Yeah, but what makes my Cortisol lower now, if this is the case? Something is up, and this something happened 2-3 days after I upped my DHEA dose til 35 mg daily, and about 3 weeks after I quit T Gel. I can't see how low testo can give Hypothyroiid symptoms, so it MUST be (?) the DHEA lowering Cortisol somehow. from the other (rt3/adrenals) says DHEA can lower Cortisol. When I asked Hertoghe about it, he just said that there are many tings that contradict each other, but we can't listen to them all, and we have to treat you because you're sick! So I think I might just add 2.5 mg more HC today and see if it works. Dunno where I'll add it tho. > From: <gibcast@...> > Subject: Just weak and cold! > " " < >, " NTHA-Chat " <NTHA-Chat > > Date: Thursday, September 9, 2010, 8:09 AM > Wondering if DHEA lowers Cortisol so > Thyroid doesn't make it into my cells like it should. > > OR if this is low testosterone. Guest guest
You can't tell how your Cortisol levels are doing on HC testing this on HC only shows you your adrenals are still working it says your not on to much HC and your not shuting down your Adrenals. To tell how your Adrenals are doing you need to come off HC slow be off it 2 weeks then test Cortisol levels this will tell you if your Adrenals have healed and if you can get by without HC. Guest guest
I know, I know. I just felt like 30 mg HC daily was fine, til I added DHEA then something happened. Umm. Hertoghe tells me I probably need to take HC, and all the other hormones for life. As much as I hate that thought, IF I will feel good with all those hormones replaced, I'm ok with it. However... I know I was given DHEA due to a lowish (a little under bottom half of the range result) DHEA in serum, but I also know that taking HC lowers DHEA. SO, after being on HC for a year, no wonder why my DHEA was lowish. Right? My morning Serum Cortisol always looked fine, near the top range. I know serum cortisol isn't the best measurment for total 24 hour cortisol, so I did the 24 hr saliva. Which came out rather lowish. I wasn't all that low, but I was lower than normal! Like half or something. And the DHEA to Cortisol ratio was HIGH. Don't know what that means. But..... I just hope I am not taking hormones if I don't need them! OBVIOUSLY I need Thyroid hormones. But do I need the rest? Hertoghe believes in treating MOST if not ALL people, even healthy ones, with hormones. Cause then people will live longer and look better. Ya know, he does that whole Anti-Aging thing. Well, if I can live longer AND look better, I say let's go for it! BUT I don't like replacing my AUTOMATIC regulation of hormones with MANUAL replacements, regulated by ME. I am NOT the expert. My BODY is the expert for regulating hormones! The best expert in the world in fact. So... Now what? > > > > > From: <gibcast@...> > > > Subject: Just weak and cold! > > > " " > < >, > " NTHA-Chat " > <NTHA-Chat > > > > Date: Thursday, September 9, 2010, 8:09 AM > > > Wondering if DHEA lowers Cortisol so > > > Thyroid doesn't make it into my cells like it should. > > > > > > OR if this is low testosterone. Guest guest
Here is what happened to me my DHEA was low for yrs and taking supplements never made me feel any better. When I tested my Aldosterone because I am all ways Dehydrated and they come back very low. This told my Dr. my body was dumping my sodium so he put me on florinef .1mcgs a day. Guess what my low DHEA levels shot up over the top of the range. I had to stop taking DHEA supplements and still today my DHEA levels are near the top of the range. http://forums.realthyroidhelp.com/viewtopic.php?f=12 & t=15450 I am Hypopituitary and need to take hormones for life. Guest guest
OMG Phil I never heard this from you before....my husband who is primary and myself secondary both have very low DHEA...mine is something like 50 and his is maybe up to 130 now..Wow got to do some research now. He is not able to take more than 15 mg of DHEA it has a severe E2 effect on him...so all good now we have a clue. And I don't have the info right here with me but will report back later....it is our understanding that DHEA and Cortisol work in opposition of each other....or maybe a better way to explain it would be they balance each other???? Oh an another subject to report back to you guys is our new understanding of how important cortisol is to good wood. We have actually lost really good wood during the fun times if he runs out of cortisol....I'll gather up all the info we learned and write another email. Guest guest
Thanks Judy here is a good link to read about this problem. It's down near the end of the page. http://www.tuberose.com/Adrenal_Glands.html This is what one needs to do to test this. http://forums.realthyroidhelp.com/viewtopic.php?f=12 & t=15453 The above site helped me a lot when I found out I was Hypopituitary. The frist thing I was told to try was to put 1/2 tsp full of good Sea Salt in my water first thing in the morning and drink it. said if this helps a lot then do the above tests. Guest guest
Well that's an interesting story Phil! Thanks! You know, Hertoghe symptom diagnosed me with being low on Aldosterone, and gave me Fludrocortison (Florinef) 0.10 mg (MG!!!) a day, and I got the WORST pressure in the head, the WORST high BP, ever!!!!!!! I quit after 8 dayus of living HELL, almost LIVING at the ER! He MIGHT have diagnosed me wrong there... I did NOT add Potassium, so maybe that's what I did wrong. But I also started straight on that BIG dose of Florinef, so.............. Guess he did a mistake with it! MAYBE I need SOME, a small amount of it, still. I don't know. I have dark circles around my eyes. When I test Aldosterone in serum and urine it's never bottom range, it's always like, towards midrange, or at least above bottom 25%! Who knows, maybe that's not enough for me. I don't know. Phil, I got a diagnose today, from Hertoghe, written on a piece of paper, that says: Hypopituitarism. I guess he means Secondary, but still. There we go. After 18 years of suffering, not knowing what's REALLY wrong with me. Now I know. I just have to make myself believe in this diagnose, and accept it. I always want to get to the bottom of things, like a true detective. But I guess it will be impossible to go any deeper than this - ONLY if I quit ALL meds, one can run tests upon tests, But.... I can't do that again! I tried quitting T3/T4 2 years ago with HORRIBLE results! My brain felt like it was gonna explode for 8 months, EVERY SINGLE SECOND OF THE TIME!!! I don't even wanna go off Thyroid meds, not again. I still question which hormones I need tho. I wonder if I can be without some of them. > > > > > > > > > > > > > From: <gibcast@...> > > > > > > > Subject: Just weak and cold! > > > > > > > " " > > > < >, > > > " NTHA-Chat " > > > <NTHA-Chat > > > > > > > > Date: Thursday, September 9, 2010, 8:09 AM > > > > > > > Wondering if DHEA lowers Cortisol so > > > > > > > Thyroid doesn't make it into my cells like it > should. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > OR if this is low testosterone. When peak and incremental values are used, sufficient doses of ACTH are 0.1μg for plasma aldosterone and 0.5μg for plasma cortisol and DHEA in the rapid ACTH test. So all three are inter-related. Here's another one: http://www.psy-journal.com/article/S0165-1781%2800%2900219-5/abstract Abnormalities of the production of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), the adrenal androgen, have been linked with disorders such as obesity and psychological disorders such as major depression. Adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) is the primary stimulant of DHEA, and cortisol, from the adrenal. We chose to examine the DHEA and DHEA/cortisol response to the novel low-dose ACTH test in healthy subjects and a cohort with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS): this test is useful in assessing subtle irregularities of pituitary-adrenal activity. Nineteen CFS subjects (diagnosed by CDC criteria) and 10 healthy subjects were examined. We demonstrated that 1 μg ACTH significantly elevates DHEA levels, with no difference in output between CFS and healthy subjects. The DHEA/cortisol ratio decreased in response to ACTH stimulation in healthy subjects but not in the CFS cohort. We suggest this divergence of response between the two groups represents an imbalance in the relative synthetic pathways of the CFS group which, if present chronically and if comparable to daily stressors, may manifest itself as an inappropriate response to stress. This difference may be important in either the genesis or propagation of the syndrome. Guest guest
I have never done any STIMulation tests. Should I do that before starting with hormones? Like I was given HC just based on one 24 hr saliva, symptoms (getting VERY lazy in the evening, almost zombie-like for all of 2008!), and one test of sitting then standing blood pressure (dropped!). Was that wrong??? :\ Morning serum cortisol was always near top range, prior to starting HC. From: Barb <baba@...> Subject: Re: Just weak and cold!
