Well, I'm not quite sure what you'd call it, but after my first infusion

(back in May 2005), I developed little orange dots (like freckles) all over my

body in peculiar patterns. It took a few days for them to show up and took

about 6-7 months for most of them to fade. I still have a few left, like the

one

on the tippy-tip of my nose. Of all the ones to remain...it had to be in the

middle of my face...Grrrrrrrrrrrr! I'm told these orange dots are the result

of your body absorbing the iron pigment.

My second infusion, about 3 weeks ago, left me with teeny-tiny ulcerations

on my upper inner thighs and behind the knees. We're not sure why this happened

- I go back to the Hema in 3 wks for my follow-up. Every now and then I get

a new ulceration. Clueless.

Just curious as to how low your iron is?

Hi , My iron was at 6.3 . I started getting IRON INJECTIONS which made my

iron level come up nicely. Have you tried iron injections first? I had similar

symptoms as yours. Good luck!

I have dealt with iron issues recently, about 5 months ago I had to have

iron infusions and felt much better. My hemotologist also found out that my

copper was undetectable and as I understand it, iron and copper bind

together making the iron more absorbable. I just went yesterday to have my

levels checked again and they were up 2 points!! I have been taking copper

everyday now with my iron and other vitamins. It seems to have really

helped me. Hope this may help you too.

Just curious.... how low was your iron prior to infusions? Did you try over

the counter or prescription iron before going the infusion route? Are the

infusions a life-long thing or will you be able to take iron pills to keep it

in range? Does your insurance pay for the infusions and about how much are

they? I've been fighting the anemia battle for about 7 months now. Just had my

blood redrawn yesterday but no results yet.

Thanks for the info.

I don't remember 2005's data too much other than my hemoglobin was 6 and my

ferritin was 17.

This 2007 go around my hemoglobin was 12.5 and my ferritin dropped from 47

to 14. So I don't know what my ferritin " high " ever was because that 47 was

taken in Feb 2007. I still feel like garbage and am scheduled for a recheck on

June 25th but I called the triage nurse yesterday and she's having me come in

Monday for labwork in case I need another infusion on the 25th.

I always get my CBC before I leave the hema's office but the transferrin and

ferritin take 24 hrs to get back.

I have been on Ferrous Gluconate (Fergon, 323 mg), 2 x day with chewable Vit

C and orange juice since 2005. I apparently don't absorb or maintain iron

levels very well, so yes, I'm sure this will be lifelong for me - well, that is

as long as I am menstruating. My Dr's and I are now looking into my

available options to " stop the flow " so that I can retain the iron that I DO

have in

my body.

Please don't get me started about my insurance company. Seriously - bad

subject. They are worthless.

Was your hemoglobin 6.3? I was 9 at the doc's office and 8.4 in the

emergency room. I was finding it hard to function, if I was a 6.3 I would

have been pushed around in a wheel chair. I was having problems breathing,

very tired, dizzy weak. I just got an iron infusion today- took all day-

shots would be nice- I have heard of B12 shots but not iron shots. So far no

side effects not even a metallic taste in my mouth. I have to go back every

4 months to have my iron level checked so that it doesn't get this bad

again. I still have a period- so it depletes my iron level, if you are post

menopausal then it would be different.

My doc looks at the hemoglobin and hematacrit the hemoglobin was 9 and the

hematocrit was 28.9, he had told me to take 2 iron pills a day then checked

the levels again and they never changed- so he said I had to have the

infusion because I wasn't absorbing the iron orally.

I had my infusion today- so far no side effects- they give a steriod first

and maybe that helps.

I have been anemic all my life- but it has gotten worse since the MGB. I

don't absorb the iron orally due to the bypass- a common problem with all

gastric bypass patients. This is not an issue for someone who doesn't bleed-

like men or post menopausal women- unless they have another issue that would

cause them to lose the iron. I have been taking over the counter iron since

my MGB, but I guess it finally caught up with me and I have had problems

with anemia my whole life. My hemoglobin was 9 and my hematacrit was 28.9

when my doc sent me to a hemotologist. The doc said I need to get my blood

checked every 4 months so they can fix the problem before it happens again.

I may only need an infusion once a year- I guess I will see how this one

works out- and it is a LIFETIME thing- the doc said unless I have the

surgery reversed- I will have to do this. I assume that I won't have to

after menopause.

My insurance covered it 100%. The infusion wasn't bad. They first hooked up

a saline IV, then gave me a steroid IV so I wouldn't have side effects, then

they did a test dose of about 15 min of iron then they waited about 45min to

an hour and gave me the real iron which took about 5 1/2 hours- I was at the

infusion center at 9am and left around 440p. It is done thru an oncology

office so most of the people in the infusion center were getting Chemo.

,

Have you considered doing something to lighten or stop your periods like

getting the Merina IUD? I just had mine put in because it greatly lightens and,

in some cases, stops periods for five years. It costs $650, but after insurance

I only paid $69 - a pretty good deal for five years of birth control and ending

the " leak in our bucket " that drains our iron levels.

I love your email address - too funny!

I read this is in a weekly column in our Sunday paper

~ The People's Pharmacy (www.PeoplesPharmacy.com) ~

Many kinds of hot drinks (coffee, tea and even cocoa)

have tannins and polyphenols that can interfere with

iron absorption. The suggestion was made to try a

tablespoonful of blackstrap molasses in hot water to

provide iron.

Another easy way to get iron is to cook in good old

fashioned cast iron pans!

Patty-

Thanks so much for the info. I just had my blood levels drawn last week and

am waiting for the results, especially the iron and ferritin.

Good luck to you!

I still feel like garbage and am scheduled for a recheck

on

June 25th but I called the triage nurse yesterday and she's having me come

in

Monday for labwork in case I need another infusion on the 25th.

I always get my CBC before I leave the hema's office but the transferrin and

ferritin take 24 hrs to get back.

I have been on Ferrous Gluconate (Fergon, 323 mg), 2 x day with chewable Vit

C and orange juice since 2005. I apparently don't absorb or maintain iron

levels very well, so yes, I'm sure this will be lifelong for me - well, that

is

as long as I am menstruating. My Dr's and I are now looking into my

available options to " stop the flow " so that I can retain the iron that I DO

have in

my body.

Please don't get me started about my insurance company. Seriously - bad

subject. They are worthless.

It doesnt matter if you are a man or post-menopausal, I am 55 been post

menopausal for 5 yrs, had my MGB with Dr R in 01. I too have been struggling

with the amemia, NO I have NO other issues at all, A common side effect of the

MGB is anemia, so just because you are post menopausal or a man, dont be lulled

into thinking it cant happen to you because someone says it cant. That is not

true. Get the yearly blood tests, and more often if necessary. I am at 11, not

too bad, BUT my ferritin is at 4 (that is bad) my husband who also had the MGB

in 01 is borderline low in iron. So our pcp has upped our iron and will check

again in 30 days once again. Yes, it can and does happen to all of us, it doesnt

matter, male or female, post menopausal, or child bearing age. Take your iron!

What were you lab results? Did your doc check your ferretin level, or did he

just do a CBC? Do you take an iron supplement? It would really depend on what

your levels say as to what approach you should take, i.e. increased

supplementaion vs. iron infusion.

My bad, Danny. So i guess no dancing bento boxes or nabe pots in your

warehouse. i did want to mention quickly that i believe Kukicha Twig

Tea is also important in dealing with anemia. The package says the

twigs are roasted for hours in iron pans. i don't like bancha,

personally, so i drink Kukicha every day, so i buy it by the case. From:

Anemia means that your Iron, Ferritin, Trans Ferrin Sat, and Hemaglobin

are below normal levels.

In my case, My Hemaglobin did not go down, only my Iron levels.

After documenting my continuing dropping iron and static Hemaglobin, my

hematologist recommended monthly iron infusions after a period of

taking oral iron supplements.

If your blood levels are low, ask your doctor to refer you to a

hematologist.
