Guest guest
I agree. You just have to get into a new " groove " with cooking and what products you use. It seems hard at first. I took a GF baking class. I was having issues getting my iron levels (along with other things) up and we think it is related to gluten. I am wondering how my iodine loading test will come out. I was having issues getting that level up too. Maybe it is related too??? Guest guest
Dear Steph ~ Hmmmm... that would be interesting: a connection between gluten, iron, and iodine. Keep us posted. And to whomever started this gluten thread: I also have allergies to eggs, soy, dairy, and corn. Try keeping all of those items out of your diet! Just eliminating the gluten would be easy. ~ -----Original Message----- I agree. You just have to get into a new " groove " with cooking and what products you use. It seems hard at first. Guest guest
I work in a group home and nutritionist there believes in low salt/low fat diet (and doesn't look very good either except she is skinny!). it is like being on another planet compared to what I think is "healthy". These are MR/CP ppl and desperately need iodine but they get drugs instead. I spend 8 hours feeding, toileting and medicating 8 ppl!! but what I wanted to say is that I would think enough iodine/Armour and salt would solve the edema problem. when I was pregnant at age 24 I had severe edema. I had just had 1/2 of my thyroid gland removed, no meds, and doc put me on no salt diet and gave me pills. when I told him they didn't work he said "take more". Gracia I know TSH doesn't mean much but, when taking Iodine, does it make your TSH go up or down usually? I had to go to my "other" DR and they drew my TSH and I got the results today and it was .002 so they did a re-draw today. I hate telling them all I take, such as Iodine, 1 tsp of SALT they flip over that part since I have severe edema, but I did tell them today and they were lost as to why I would do that. Oh well, was just wondering about the TSH.Thank you, Janie
Guest guest
you are on enough Armour and iodine and still have edema? Gracia This was just a conventional DR, , not holistic. They only know about TSH...lol. He was testing for some other things and threw the TSH in there. He said he was going to find out why I have such extreme edema. Felt like saying, OK, your the hero, nobody in 16 yrs of testing me knows why but, OK. I only went back to him because they hold my Lasix and K-dur hostage. If you don't go every so often, they won't refill it. He ran an electrocardiogram, chest x-ray, pelvic ultrasound, blood test for kidney disease. I was waiting for them to insisted I have a mammogram, not going to happen!Anyway, I was just wondering why that TSH was so low and if it had to do with the iodine. I will let DR B worry about the important stuff. They said my cholesterol is 191 and that is just too high! I think there was a poster on every wall from drug reps advertising statins. Guest guest
Hi Gracia, I sure know where you are coming from! I work at a hospital (med/surg/oncology unit) and there are SO many things that drive me crazy there. Like you said, the low salt/low fat diets, your body NEEDS salt and the minerals that go along with it, but no salt for the ones that need it the most. And the ones that do get salt get the white crap that is no good for you. And your body needs HEALTHY fats like butter from grass fed beef (coconut oil too) but what do they pass out? Promise margerine! And we won't even go there about the chemo and radation! That REALLY sends me into orbit...lol. You don't know how many days I wish I could just go room to room and pass out Iodine to every patient. Guest guest
I think us in the healthcare field really have a hard time observing these issues. I am a physical therapist, usually do outpatient but got back into home health care. Most of my patients have low thyroid function/adrenal fatigue. I see orthostatic hypotension like crazy!!! I want to tell everyone what I know but risk pissing off doctors. It is hard to see the elderly frail and on so many meds making them sicker!! Just had to share in the frustration. > > > > > > I work in a group home and nutritionist there believes in low > salt/low fat diet (and doesn't look very good either except she is > skinny!). it is like being on another planet compared to what I > think is " healthy " . Guest guest
Hi Gracia, I am on 2 grains of Nature-throid (same as Armour), 50 mg Lugol's, prgnenolone, DMG, many other natural stuff Dr B put me on. And yes, I have severe pitting edema, always. I have had it since I was about 18 years old and at that time, I weighed about 115 lbs. Maybe starting into hypo but wasn't over weight. Hypo kicked in BIG TIME when I quit smoking 16 yrs ago, gained 74 lbs., and the edema got much worse. I called my Dr yesterday (because I was whinning about being so sleepy and fatigued again)and he is going to mail me the paper work to go get some blood work done and possibly up my thy meds. I know if I cut most carbs out of my diet (as in Atkins diet) it helps a little bit but not much. Guest guest
Not eating dairy and eggs just plain sucks. Until the antibodies showed up I ate eggs several times a day and I just love cheese. What makes it bearable is all the great speciality cheeses available now ~ I can find different varieties of goat and sheep's milk cheeese that I am fine with. I am also fortunate to be able to get goat's milk fresh from the farm. Yum. ~ -----Original Message----- I have soy too. Corn and dairy would be hard for me. Guest guest
My sister's husband and many more people that I personally know, that have been lactose intolerant and had dairy sensitivities, have seen it completely disappear when they started drinking RAW cow's milk. Most people are sensitive to the WAY the milk is processed. One young man that I know told me he can not have any dairy, it causes too many problems for him. I brought him some raw milk and now he is hooked on it. He bought a cow share and drinks tons of milk and makes his own kefir. (I also got him taking iodine :-). Perhaps the reason you are able to tolerate the goat and sheep dairy is because it is raw? Janie > > > Not eating dairy and eggs just plain sucks. Guest guest
-This person is a dietician, NOT a nutritionist. Those hospital/school lunch planners have co-opted the title, as they name dietician had already gotten a bad wrap. Now they will make nutritionists look bad as well. How annoying! Savvy, the nutritionist. -- In iodine , " Gracia " <circe@...> wrote: > > > I work in a group home and nutritionist there believes in low salt/low fat diet (and doesn't look very good either except she is skinny!). it is like being on another planet compared to what I think is " healthy " . Guest guest
Janie... 1. Do you take a separate B-complex? If not, then vitamin shoppe and Nature Made sell a good timed release B-complex in 100mgs and 150mgs. I took that when I was pregnant (when I wasn't nauseous) and along with a good chelated cal/mag/potassium by country life. I didn't have a problem with swelling at all and my bp remained normal even with a very stressful job. I was able to wear my heels (1 1/2 " ) and my wedding ring the entire 8 1/2 months (Aubrey decided to make an appearance about 3 weeks early). 2. I thought the " magic " number for cholesterol was below 200. I would tell your doctor to go take a flying leap into a big vat of statins and leave you the heck alone about your cholesterol numbers (as long as your HDL is above 57-- if not extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil will get that up). Guest guest
Hi Lorie, You are cracking me up here. That is exactly what I feel like telling Dr's " go take a flying leap into a big vat of statins " . Now that is funny, LOL. Yes I take a B-complex plus niacin, cal/mag/,potasium and... I would have to go look cause I take so much vitamins and minerals. But thanks for the idea. I swelled a bit while pregnant but nothing like I do now. Thanks, Janie > > > > This was just a conventional DR, , not holistic. They only > > know about TSH...lol. He was testing for some other things and threw > > the TSH in there. Guest guest
>"I have soy too. Corn and dairy would be hard for me." Steph<< Hello there, I don't post much here....but, I was just wondering....does this mean you drink and eat soy Steph? If so, here's a really interesting article on the dangers of soy: http://www.westonaprice.org/soy/index.html Unless it is fermented, soy is not good for us at all. Among other things it is harmful to the thyroid. There is also an awesome book on soy: The "Whole Soy Story" by Kaayla T. , PhD, CCN The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food. A groundbreaking expose that tells the truth about soy that scientists know but that the soy industry has tried to suppress. Soy is not a health food, does not prevent disease and has not even been proven safe. Epidemiological, clinical and laboratory studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive problems, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders, even heart disease and cancer. They sneak soy in tons of products, lots of processed foods. I'm sure it's because it's cheap, what other reason would there be? The food industry is the largest money maker in the country. I figure if an item is used often in processed foods (such as corn syrup & soy) it's most likely inexpensive, crud and not good for us....the food manufacturers just like it cuz it is cheap. As we all know, they are just in it for the money, the same as big pharma. Sorry if I am repeating info you are all already aware of here! The Famous, the Infamous, the Lame - in your browser. Guest guest
Hi Janie ~ Nope ~ can't tolerate raw cow's milk either. You are right: most people can drink raw cow's milk ~ and that it is one of the most healthy foods on the planet. My kids do fine with it, but not me. Guest guest
Thats quite shocking really, they do seem to pay a lot of attention to the TSH, mine was 6.3 and an endo told me it wasnt too bad! T3 seems to be of no importance to them and an endo told me it was a not needed test. I totally disagree with that because when my tests were at their best, as in TSH 0.66 and T4 18.1 my T3 was still low in range but nothing was made of it, thus my decision to switch to armour Hi LilianEndo told me ideal TSH is 1.0.
