Guest guest
It's hard to say one needs to go by how they feel. My Free T3 is in the same units mine is 3.0 in your units I think I would be 300. But I am on 150 mcgs of Generic Synthroid and 5 mgs of Generic Cytomel 2x's / day. My Free T4 is 1.3. I tried going up on the Cytomel 3x's / day and I felt hyper. One thing that needs to be tested before going on Thyroud meds is cortisol do a 4x's /day saliva test if low she needs to treat this first. We need Cortisol to carry the thyroid hormones out of the blood into the cells. So if she is low on Cortisol and goes on meds all this will do it build up in her blood. Here TSH is a flag going up anything over 2 can mean she is hypo. She needs the labs in this link. http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/recommended-labwork/ Co-Moderator Phil > From: marc200134470 <cfs38@...> > Subject: Thyroid Results,......Barb, Phil!! > > Date: Thursday, November 4, 2010, 12:22 PM > I had a thread about my mothers TSH > rising to over 3, and was going to have her ask the doc for > further testing,.....can't find it now so here is a new one! > ) > > As per usual, I told her exactly what tests to ask for, but > the doc ordered TSH, FT3/4 only. Guest guest
Marc...is your mom on thyroid meds (sorry if I missed her drug/dose)? If so, she might use a small bump up in small increments..many feel best with TSH around 1 (or less, everyone different), so there is room to adjust a bit here in her case...based on TSH / Free T3 (Free T4 may *report* low due if she is taking dessicated thyroid ) however, another thing maybe to consider if she is > 50 y.o is s*x hormones: Progesterone and testosterone levels drop incredibly after meno..E stays high (not high per se more that is not matched by the balancing effects of good Progesterone levels) in many...low T can be a factor in losing muscle/tiredness/inability to get motivated etc in women..how is her sleep at night? ....because I am way > 50 I know I can't eat any of the stuff I used to even 10 years ago <<LOL>> .. she will want to limit *white stuff*, gluten and most simple carbs in general...and some do well with a 1-2 of servings of complex carbs, but mostly green veggies/good fats/clean protein sources...what is she eating in a typical day? Guest guest
My mother is not on any thyroid meds at this point. Also as far as sex hormones go, she has no clue since she has never been tested. She had a total hysterectomy many years ago, and did not take the 'horse' hormones for long. God only knows what levels she has in that department at this stage. Her diet is pretty good,......although she does eat more carbs by far than I do. She is 69 BTW. > > Marc...is your mom on thyroid meds (sorry if I missed her drug/dose)? Guest guest
Good for her getting off the Pre-mare (insert horse whinney here)-in--it in no way mimics what a woman's body would make if it could and it causes cancer..I suspect she would feel tons better with a bit of bioidentical estrogen/progesterone therapy...EL > > > > Marc...is your mom on thyroid meds (sorry if I missed her drug/dose)? Guest guest
I agree,......actually I am waiting to finish all of my testing and see what this last guy I went to does for me. My initial impression was very good as I stated in another thread. Being he is an OB/GYN, and 'functional medicine' I already thought of sending her to him. Still hoping that Barb pops in and gives her opinion also. From what I have learned here and a few other articles,....I still think her TSH is too high, and that her FT3 is far from optimal. I just wish these folks would do the correct tests when you request them. Now she will have to have the WHOLE panel I am having done again when she sees the doc I am going to. > > Good for her getting off the Pre-mare (insert horse whinney here)-in--it in no way mimics what a woman's body would make if it could and it causes cancer..I suspect she would feel tons better with a bit of bioidentical estrogen/progesterone therapy...EL >
Guest guest
Hi Marc, I just got back from vacation last night, so haven't been around. You're reading her labs correctly, healthy TSH is closer to 1, FT4 is fine at 1.2-1.4, but FT3 is low, and should be 60% of range or higher, so 3.4+, meaning she's low. Things that could help her conversion are selenium, Vit D, Vit B12, good probiotics (in pills or yogurt), and reducing the carbs in her diet. Apparently 20% of T4 to T3 conversion is done in your gut, and if you eat a lot of sugar/carbs, or have taken a lot of antibiotics in the past, that compromises your gut health. People that are hypo from Hashi's would especially do well to eliminate grains, especially wheat, barley, and rye. Guest guest
Barb,.....thanks for responding, and hope you enjoyed your vacation. This is a link to the vitamin/fish oil pack she takes. http://www.fortifeye.com/index.php?main_page=product_info & products_id=4 We both go to the eye doctor that came up with them locally, now they are selling all over the country. She takes a pack a day, which includes 2 pills, and a fish oil capsule. She also takes another fish oil of the same brand for 2 per day. Also eats yogurt with probiotics in them on a regular basis. As I said before though,....she is more of a carb lover than I am by far. She does not eat white bread though. I guess I will try once again to tell her about the carbs, and maybe get her to see that doc I am going to after I get my final impression of his treatment. I just can't figure out why her TSH is so high. While it appears I have a conversion issue with non-optimal FT3, my last TSH was 1.09 which is pretty good. I am still working my way through the myriad of tests this last doc ordered!
