Guest guest
sam, it is not 2003 anymore, it is 2008 and they just changed the upper ranges back to the old standards. this happens quite frequently in medicine- that they change lab reference levels. medicine is NOT a static profession, we do change lab reference levels, some for the better and some NOt. I am NOT stating the this change back is for the good- it isn't because that means many more people will get screwed in thyroid disease. nancie Test Results > > > > > > Here are my thyroid test results. > > > > TSH .009 Range 0.35-5.50 > > > > > > > --------------------------------- > Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile. Guest guest
It was changed back to the old in 2003? That is not what the reference range was when I was seeing my endo at the time. We were going by 3 not 5. That was the case even with the second doctor I saw. Now with my new doctor the ref. range was 0.40 - 4.50 mIU/L. I think the med people need to go back to school at least be consistent. Do we know why they changed it again? Guest guest
Venizia, so far I have not found any solid evidence that it has changed from (0.3-3.0) to anything higher. I monitor the AACE site and alerts/reports, and haven't found anything that mentions a change. Let's see if anyone finds different info that can be verified. Guest guest
Venezia, Possibly you didn't see my lab results posted and the lab range stated on the report to be (0.3-5.5). It was right there in black and white, so that is proof that at least some of the labs have changed. If you look at it from the perspective of keeping people at least a little bit sick, so they can be prescribed more drugs for their " illnesses " , it makes sense. Guest guest
Roni, that just means your lab hasn't changed to the new upper limits. Guest guest
Well yes, something has changed because as I stated below in my results the range was .040 - 4.50. That's not .3 - 3.0. I am going to mention this to my doctor the next time I talk to him. So those of us that do not treat ourselves are probably going to have a more difficult time convincing our doctors to continue as previous.....if this is true. I guess I will read, read, read. It's a red letter day for the thyroid-challenged! It all started this week when I was reviewing my patients' lab reports. I noticed there was one from Hunter Laboratory, not far from us here in Northern California. Their lab report showed a patient's TSH level as 3.4, and this was flagged as being outside the normal range! It turns out that their new 'range of normal' is now .25 to 2.5, which is narrower than the revised range proposed by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists several years ago. Guest guest
, I thought (0.2-2.5) was the pregnancy range. I have a recent public awareness release from AACE: http://www.aace.com/public/awareness/tam/2006/pdfs/release.pdf (still talks about 0.3-3.0 as he TSH range) There are a few Q and A's on the pregnancy range here: http://www.aacc.org/AACC/events/expert_access/2006/TSHRange/qanda.htm I'd look for more but I have to go shovel out the driveway. I totally hate snow...especially if it's the 4-6 inch range. Sam > > Just to add to the confusion Shomon's Thyroid Disease blog reports > the new range is 0.25 to 2.5. Guest guest
It is surprising and a bit annoying that there are differences in labs for reference ranges in this and probably other tests. It would seem to me that these reference ranges should be uniform, so that testing anywhere elicits the same ranges. Without this information, all we are doing is guessing. I assume that by cg you mean a microgram. Most people abbreviate this using the Greek letter mu, as in ug, or as the pharmacists do, as mcg. I have never seen cg before, except to mean centigram, which is a dose that would kill you in a few days. If your thyroid is failing, you will most likely eventually need between 100 and 150 mcg, depending on your weight. Women often need more. No, but it is a precursor for several hormones including those involved with sex. Are you taking some other supplement with DHEA? I am having carb cravings, what's that about? Eating too many carbs or being diabetic. > ... FT3: think this is high because > I am taking too much, correct?) Not necessarily. FT3 levels spike after taking Armour. If you were taking too much, FT4 would also be out of bounds. Instead, it is just at the high end of the normal range. Chuck
Guest guest
Chuck, Thanks for responding. The only supplements I am taking are Vit. D, Magnesium occasionally, selenium. No DHEA. So why so high. I did take Armour the day of the test (by mistake) So I am going to have to mention that to my doctor when I see him on Thurs. I took the Armour at 5:30am and the test was at 12 noon. I thought maybe it would have worn off by then. No? Venizia -- In hypothyroidism , Chuck B <gumboyaya@...> wrote: > > Venizia, > > You wrote: > > ... Guest guest
Venizia, Tell your doctor when you took the meds. He should be able to work back from that. No clue on the DHEA, although high readings are somewhat rare. Since it is made in the adrenal glands, it could indicate an abnormality there. Any other adrenal hormones out of whack?
