But here's reality. Mine, at least:

1. I work. I drive an hour every morning to get there and an hour every evening to get home. Weekdays, time's a little short for me.

** My reality too. I do not have the 2 hr commute daily. Mine is more like 30 minutes RT, so definitely manageable. OF course that is if I drive. When I take the bus or anything different, adds to it.

2. I live with (I admit) an overbearing mother. She cooks, she hates my cooking (because I cook vegetable intense, healthy meals) and insists on making my dinners every night, and as much as I've truly tried, I can't change that.

** My reality: live with a finicky teenager. Actually, he rather likes to eat healthy and gets bored with the options. I need to come up with better plans.

3. I love soda. I only have one regular and one diet every day, to wash down lunch and dinner, the rest of the time I drink water or green tea. I can have soda and still lose weight.

** I wouldn't say I *love* soda. I can live without it. At the very most, I only have one a day. If even that. So yeah, soda's not my downfall.

4. I love chocolate. I don't think 3 mini milky ways is going to crash my diet. 300 might. 30 might. But I can stop at 3. So now and again, I have them.

** AMEN SISTER!! OMG AMEN!! LOL!! I love chocolate too and have actually done better weaning myself off it so I do not *have* to have it daily.

5. I hate exercise but I am aware that if I truly want to lose weight, this is the one place where there is no middle ground. I HAVE to exercise as many days as I can fit into a week to do that.

** I can't say as I still hate it, but it is a daily struggle with my mind to do it.

I guess where I'm going with this, is, if a WL program is going to work for someone, especially someone who is morbidly obese and a food addict, shutting off every single food they love is not going to work for them. This is the type person that needs to form an alliance with food, which is what I'm now doing. I'm really not 'dieting'. I'm watching my fat/calorie intake and moving my ass. And it's working. I've said it a million times and even though before now I've not stuck to it, discipline is the key. Positive thinking is the door. No matter what you're doing to get the weight off, never say 'can't' and always stay positive, even when the chops ... err ... chips ...are down.

** Good place to be in Sapphy. Keep up the great efforts!!

Diet and Exercise

I've been thinking a lot about my diet, and dieting in general lately. Specially now that things are going well for me dietwise. () is a fantastic person, a great motivator, and knows his stuff about weightloss, but we were in chat last night and again he suggested that everyone only have a salad for dinner. He freaks if you admit to having even one mini candy bar. Most people admonish anyone who drinks soda. So if one lived religiously by 's philosophy and society in general when it comes to health, we'd all be eating nothing but pure healthy food and drinking only pure water and having no indulgences whatsoever. And that would be great. I think we all SHOULD eat like that. But here's reality. Mine, at least:

Oh, I try, believe me! MY finicky son is almost 10 years older than yours, but he drive sme just as crazy when it comes to food! I posted this week's menu last Thursday and at the time he looked at it, approved of everything I planned (all meals he had in the past and enjoyed) so over the weekend that's waht I shopped for. This morning he tells me he'll just cook up a box of mac & cheese tonight because he doesn't feel like the pasta dish I have planned. He could tell by the steam coming out of my ears (can you tell *why* my BP goes up now and then?) that I was a bit annoyed, so he said ok, he'll eat when I cook, just don't expect him to eat much of it, and he'll probably grab a sandwich later tonight, anyway.

As I said a few messages ago - Men!

> ** AMEN SISTER!!? OMG AMEN!!? LOL!!? I love chocolate too and have actually done better weaning myself off it so I do not *have* to have it daily.

Chocolate is as essential to females as estrogen and progesterone are! I'm sure I can do a Google search and find at least a dozen studies that say so. I limit myself to once or twice a week of those little semi-sweet chocolate chips and drop them into my hot oatmeal and swirl them around when they melt. A little goes a long way.

> 5. I hate exercise

Now here's where *I* go Amen, Sister!! Especially after last Monday.

> but I am aware that if I truly want to lose weight, this is the one place where there is no middle ground. I HAVE to exercise as many days as I can fit into a week to do that.

The heart rate monitor I got is really helping me with this. I'm wearing it every day and work out until I do reach that magic 400 calorie number that the National Weight Loss Registry says is what the successful people work off each day. It may take 4 different workouts, now that the exercise bike is off-limits, but it *must* get done.

>I've said it a million times and even though before now I've not stuck to it, discipline is the key.

Just this morning I was looking at old messages on a "normal eating" blog I visit now and then, and came across this post. As much as I hate to admit it, I have to agree with what she says - I do have to struggle harder if I want to lose this weight.

Struggle Harder

Through my decades of experience with disregulated eaters, I’ve concluded that the #1 problem in a stalled or slow recovery is that you don’t struggle hard enough with your food demons. You make efforts here and there to not eat when you’re not hungry or to stop when you’re full, but more often than not, you’re sporadic in your thrusts, give in to food abuse urges too easily, then wonder why you’re still stuck in unhealthy behaviors.

In my March 9 and June 1, 2007 blogs, I wrote about the value of struggle, the process which, along with insight, curiosity, and self-compassion, is essential in developing skills for “normal” eating. When you’re trying to overcome a longstanding eating disorder, you can’t just tilt at recovery half-heartedly. Any and all encounters which might lead to food have to be a pitched battle. If you want to learn to eat sanely, each time you have the urge to nosh when you’re not hungry, every instance of deciding what to eat, any time you want to eat past full must turn into a full-blown debate with yourself. If you simply have the idea, Gee I’d like some Nachos even though I just finished a huge dinner 20 minutes ago, and give in immediately, you’re doomed to dysfunctional eating. No amount of therapy, reading, group sharing, or journal writing will change that fact.

Whenever food pops into your head, you must engage in a full-court press and spend time struggling to come out on the healthy side of a decision. You may spend 10 minutes arguing with yourself about whether to have that third chocolate chip cookie or deciding if you should finish the other half of your egg salad sandwich because you’re approaching full. You need to go back and forth about leaving one donut—even one-half of one--in the box or one spoonful of ice cream in the bottom of the container. You need to feel big time discomfort, agonize, and fight the good fight with yourself 24/7.

You don’t have to win each skirmish to win the war. The act of struggling—reflecting, consciously considering options, and giving the healthy part of you opportunity to be heard—is what develops decision-making skills and good judgment. The goal is to quit acting impulsively and giving in right away and to build emotional muscle. If you debate with yourself for 15 minutes about whether to finish the leftover lasagna because it’s midnight and you don’t want to go to sleep and go on to eat it, that 15 minutes had value because you put in a valiant effort even if you didn’t make a healthy choice. You are in a war between the unhealthy and healthy parts of yourself and war is serious business. Don’t let one eating opportunity pass without bloodying yourself. Down the road, when the war is over, you can sit back and enjoy the spoils of “normal” eating.

I've seen an awful lot of people who went on a crash diet like this, and they

lost the weight, but a few years later they had gained it all back and more.

Crash diets lead to yo-yo weight problems.

Anything under 1000 calories per day will throw your body into a starvation mode

and set you up for disaster. Remember Oprah's liquid diet where she lost all

that weight and then ballooned up to a greater weight than when she started?

That happens a lot.

Many people keep working at diets and gain and lose the same 15 lbs over and

over again.

Look how your got to where you are today. When I was 21 I weighed 125 lbs, At

61 I weigh 215. So I gained 2 1/4 lbs per year.

If you lose just a pound a month and keep it off you will be much better off in

the long run.

If there was a simple answer to this problem we wouldn't see hundreds of diet

plans and books.

A pound of fat equates to 3500 calories. If you reduce your intake or increase

your expenditure by 500 calories a day you will lose a pound a week.

Lets say you try for half that, which is more sustainable. You consume 125

fewer calories per day and exercise to burn 125 more calories per day. You then

lose 2 pounds a month or 24 pounds in a year.

I find that a variant of the South Beach diet, i.e. high protein, high fat, low

carb diet helps you fight hunger. A bacon and egg breakfast with no toast or

butter will last most of the day. A 6 oz steak, with no potato makes a dandy

meal too.

I think you should eat like a bird instead of a python. Many small snacks during

the day will keep you from going into starvation mode and then gorging when you

finally start eating.

Well, none of us really need this advice. We all know how it works. I'm just

saying one thing..... Crash diets are unhealthy and in the long run they don't

work.

" Diet " is pretty simple although so many try to make it overly complicated. Just

stick with lean meats, veggies (mostly green), fruits early in the day, nuts,

and healthy fats (like olive oil). Limit any bread intake, watch your sugar, and

you are good to go. It's literally that easy. If you get bored of eating like

this, too bad...keep doing it and you will get used to it. It's ok to cheat

some, but keep it to a minimum. AND...If you are eating like this you can pretty

much eat as much as you want to!

I forgot to mention, that I did go to the gym about 4-5 times a week.

1 hr on treadmill speed around 4.0 (fast walking).

Lift weights for an hour.

It all comes down to will power my friend. Good luck.

PS: Also, you have to get to a point where hunger is just a feeling that

needs to be supressed. Any food will do that, even healthy ones. Also

drink lots of water.
