Guest guest
's problem is that they last for days! The one he has now has been going on since Tuesday. He is 11 and weighs 115 and as tall as I am. The problems with the meds is that insurance won't pay for others until he is 12 (in Jan.) We chose Topamax because of the weight issues. The dr gave us enough samples of Zomig to get to that 12 yr mark. You can not take more than 8 Zomig in a month. She gave us 14. I also did a symptom log and it really helped the dr. We noticed that his are brought on by weather changes and not enough sleep. www.caringbridge.org/visit/alexsmith @...: triplep_01@...: Fri, 30 Nov 2007 09:12:59 -0800Subject: Re: Re: Migraines I think the symptom log is a great idea. I have food and smell triggers that will bring on a migraine(snickers and spagettios are the worst..I have had them since I was a teenager. Although i still miss spagettios..LOL) I can not stand the smell of strong perfume it will send me into one quickly. Also stress is a big trigger as well. I too have alot of blurred vision. I am so sorry that your child is getting these they are awful. I am not sure what they will give you medication wise for a child. When I was 16 I started on Midrin and that helped me for awhile. I do not think it is very strong. (You can check it out on WebMd) I hope that things get better. I will pray that they do. Guest guest
" elavil.. which I am nervous about.. " Hi, Kathleen. I can understand. One doc thought about giving this (amitriptyline) to my daughter for pain management in her ankles, but it is very experimental for that purpose. And, because it can have an affect on personality, is an anticholinergic (would slow down her gut even more) and has been associated with heart problems -- we decided not to go that route. All that being said, I was told by a genetics doc that it is useful for migraines and can help manage some of the symptoms associated with metabolic disturbances. He requires ECG baseline before using it. I'd still weigh the benefits/drawbacks of each -- and see where the scale falls...what you feel most comfortable trying. Guest guest
--- Just thought Id pop in here, as I just started this med two weeks ago. I have had migraines since childhood, and its been a struggle. I went to see a new urologist for a bladder disease, and he rec'd this med for that pain......it was a bonus to me after he mentioned it also helps migraines. And, it helps me sleep--I have a lot of trouble with that. After about a week, it really did help cut down on my headaches. And it helps the bladder pain. And it helps me sleep. all for $4.40 a bottle---Im lovin it!Ive had no ill effects so far. valarie In , Schulman <dietdoc@...> wrote: > > " elavil.. which I am nervous about.. Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, They did warn us of the weight gain side effect from the Periactin, but since all my boys are tall and skinny, they thought he could use a little extra . . . I sure wish I had that metabolism!! I have to say, it really does work for him, but we sure have noticed a major increase in his appetite. Guest guest
Pam, If you have been taking magnesium along with the iodoral, the magnesium was most likely the cure. I suffered for years from severe migraines that could last four days. I tried every medication including mixing things like imitrex (and other types) with tylenol and codeine. The cure I found was eliminating all fast food, coloring, sugar, milk and meat, zero soda and alcohol. Maintaining ultra clean diet and exercise, lots of clean water and green tea. Supplementing with magnesium, ginger, turmeric, flax and salmon oil. The magnesium I take is magnesium taurate by Cariovascular Research, available through Vitamin Shoppe, and Amazon. You can take kava kava for stress induced migraines as well, though some people are alarmed at the warnings about the liver...I am still living, so much for that and it has been used in the South Pacific for years. I have people say to me that this is impossible to do. It's not. When you discover what whole foods and healthy living can do for you, there is no turning back. Results- zero headaches, body aches, or arthritis! beth
Guest guest
I agree, magnesium can eliminate migraines. An ND I saw told me that 2000mg taken at the first sign of a migraine will head it off...or if magnesium is taken after the migraine has begun, it will work, but, will take a bit longer. Sometimes diarrhea then happens, but, hey! what is worse? Also, the ND said that one of his patients has gone to the ER and received magnesium via an IV for her migraines. Of course, taking magnesium every day as a preventive is a good idea, but, with some people that won't work. With me, what really worked was to also take biohormone progesterone from a compounding pharmacy to balance my estrogen and progesterone so that I didn't have too much estrogen in relation to the progesterone...then no migraines! If your migraines always occur a few days before your monthly period then your migraines are caused by estrogen dominance (too much estrogen). A gynecologist at the university clinic showed me on a chart how this happens. > > Pam, > > If you have been taking magnesium along with the iodoral, the magnesium > was most likely > the cure. Guest guest
There is also a chemical in bananas which cause asthma. I was having strange attacks at night where I would wake up and not be able to breathe. At first I thought it was maybe sleep apnea. When I would wake up I thought at first I was dying in my sleep. This kept happening every night. Then for a few weeks I did not have this happen. Then a friend came to stay with me. I had gone shopping and bought bananas(first time in 2 weeks). I offered him a banana(since he only ate raw foods) and he refused, explaining that bananas have a chemical in them that triggers asthmatic attacks(he is a bad asthmatic). So, I too, stopped eating bananas and did not have any episodes again until recently when I ate only 2 or so small pieces of banana. That night I woke up. It felt like I was dying in my sleep. I thought I would share that in case anyone here is asthmatic. From: LMay <mark9_41cupofwater@...>Subject: migraines Received: Saturday, 8 November, 2008, 11:12 PM Hi all When I was visiting with my brother yesterday we were talking about headaches and he told me about an article that he had read in the cappers weekly magazine about migraines and bananas. He has suffered with migraines off and on for years. He had not had a migraine in 6 months when he bought bananas and ate a couple and got a very bad migraine. It was while he was holding his thumb v trying to get rid of the pain that he read the article. When my sister came out and he told her what was going on she just told him no more bananas. The next morning he had no more pain. The article said that there is a chemical in bananas that can cause migraines. LOL LMay Search 1000's of available singles in your area at the new 7 Dating. Guest guest
Wow! First let me introduce myself. I joined this group a while back, but have not been really active. With as much hospital time I like to check in and read the posts as I can, but I have never replied before. In comparison to some of you my issues seem almost trivial. I am a severe asthmatic, and also have some permanent lower lung damage from an ozone exposure at work. Over 10 weeks in the hospital from May to August, and two weeks at the Mayo clinic in ville, FL in September. I have never had a problem with bananas. In fact both my asthma specialist and endocronologist (due to the lung issues I am on high dosages of Prednisone and have developed Cushing's sydrome and diabetes) recommend that I eat one every day. Are you allergic to them in some way? Not saying that is the case. Could just be a variation in triggers. If I have learned anything this past year it is that asthma has so many triggers that vary widely from person to person. Guest guest
Amy, Migraines are complex and different people have different triggers, but here's what helps me. First, I stay super strict on Bee's diet with whole non-processed foods. This does two things for me. It completely eliminates the " big 7 " migraine trigger foods (caffeine, chocolate, aged cheese, alcohol, MSG, nitrates, and aspartame). It also makes my blood sugar really stable. Blood sugar swings were big migraine triggers for me. Second, I have found my last two triggers are hormonal (monthly cycles) and structural (problems in my neck). I'm doing some body work to try to address the structural component. I'm hoping that the hormonal part will even out as I get further on Bee's diet. Lastly, I go to acupuncture when I get a migraine. It's the only thing that really reduces the pain for me, usually enough I can function. I hope that helps. Lilac > > Any migraine sufferers with quality relief suggestions? I do know that technique is very very helpful because it teaches te release of the head neck tension which often generates migraine. My daughter has very bad migraines and we have not found a solution to it yet. I thought perhaps LDN might offer promise. Thank you.
