Guest guest
Dear , It is so interesting to hear this perspective! My original plan was to cut out things that I don't care about so much, which create added strain on the liver (ie. meat, saturated fats, greasy foods, sugar etc). I am very conscious of my diet, and have increased " liver friendly " foods and herbal supplements. When I get a little more energy, I'll also be on my exercise routine again. Anyways, I figure if I make all of these lifestyle changes, then I can OCCASIONALLY go out for a night of drinking?!?!? Is this what you do? I'm really hoping I have this option. I love to drink! When you binge drank a few weeks ago, how did it interact with your meds? I'd prefer to cut out the drinking in moderation, and just have an all-out drinking night once in a while. Ah dear. Let me know what you think! >From: " .Hutchinson " <brandy.hutchinson@...> >Reply- onelist > onelist >Subject: Re: [ ] to introduce myself >Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 08:12:56 -0700 > >From: " .Hutchinson " <brandy.hutchinson@...> > >Hello and > > >I was diagnosed when I was 23 years old and now am 26!! Guest guest
Dear , Thanks for your sharing your viewpoint on this. It's good you recognize the dangers of drinking, because they are real. Maybe the fact that your levels dropped after drinking is due, not to the drinking, but to the positive outlook you've had around this time! It seems that your attitudes have changed significantly (that's awesome!), which has probably lowered your stress levels like crazy! Personally, I think I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see exactly what stage I'm at (I get the results of my biopsy!). Hopefully, a drink now and again will be ok. Like you said, I may get drunk off of 2 now!!! (Wouldn't that be nice?!?!?) I'm getting kind of nervous. My boyfriend, whom I rely on like you wouldn't believe, is in Europe for 6 weeks!! I love him, but I miss him. Somehow, I just don't feel as strong when he's not here... I'm going to try to adopt your view of living " with " the disease, not " for " it. It would be nice to feel normal again, and simply live. Thanks again for responding! >From: " .Hutchinson " <brandy.hutchinson@...> >Reply- onelist > onelist >Subject: Re: [ ] Alcohol >Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 12:50:53 -0700 > >From: " .Hutchinson " <brandy.hutchinson@...> > >Hi > >lol at this moment the biggest problem for me is my riding lawn mower >is broke, I love that machine!! lol > >Any ways when I was first diagnosed i was in huge denial!! Guest guest
Hi lol at this moment the biggest problem for me is my riding lawn mower is broke, I love that machine!! lol Any ways when I was first diagnosed i was in huge denial!! And kept drinking!! well wine lol. (not a real drink) lol. I kept eating crap and drinking and i went into remission in the first year on imuran and predsione. I responded really well. I was told not to drink because my liver was working hard enough without making it work harder with drinking. I went of predisone when I hit remission and I stopped drinking and I started eating a bit better!! and For the last two years I have not been responding to meds or anything!! up until the last three weeks. In the beginning when I drank I was on high doses of pred and the only thing that happened was my right foot would swell??? and I'd be tired for a couple of days. three weeks ago when I drank, I had a wonderful time!! it was so nice to not worry about my illness, work etc.. and just let lose!! mind you I slept the next day, (all day) but I did not puke!! I was just tired. Really if you have liver problems drinking is not a good idea!! But when I was being diagnosed I thought I drank allot then, but doctors said the binge drinking i did on weekends, would not damage my liver. Doctors said I should not drink, but one or two once in a while will not hurt me!! So 5-6 I won't tell any body lol. i tried doing things by the book and I was really sick, I was obsessing over it, and there gonna send me to a phychritist?? Guest guest
, I still order a Pina Colada everytime we go out for Mexican food. I like the way they taste. I seldom finish it, but it's just part of the fun. I also love those fruity rum drinks that some Asian and Polynesian restaurants serve, but I wouldn't dare take more than a sip or two, mostly because I can " feel " the effects almost immediately. If it's socially more comfortable, I'll allow someone to pour me a glass of wine and then I just don't drink it. No one notices after the first glass whether you're on the first or the fifth, so it's a way to blend in if that's important. I won't get on my Nation grandstand about the dangers of that old demon rum, but even those without liver disease should always be aware that drinking can become a trap. Ironically, if we enjoy it too much, that's usually a good sign that we shouldn't drink. Hope I don't sound preachy, though I probably do. I'm just about the only person in our group of family and friends who rarely if ever drinks, but I do think that booze carries more than it's share of danagers. i
Guest guest
That pina colada must be very good to take chances like that, I stay with the Virgin type.
Guest guest
Hi, I don't think that a few sips of a Pina Colada once every month or two has a ratio effect of 1 to 1, i.e., I doubt that I'm going to advance my liver disease by this. The risk would be from drinking on a regular basis from all of the literature I've read. However, I do know what you're saying. We shouldn't take chances and it's foolish to aggravate our conditions knowingly. I'm a fairly moderate person in my personal habits. We we all have to know ourselves, and I know that I'm not going to do anything to extremes nor am I going to deliberately harm myself. Surprisingly, I've never been told by any of my doctors that I shouldn't drink. Maybe they assume that I don't or won't or maybe they've come to know me well enough to realize that I don't go off in extreme directions. Generally, your point is good and I appreciate and understand why you've made it. Take care, Geri

Guest guest
, Awhile back I ordered a " virgin " MaiTai at an Asian restaurant and they brought me one with alcohol in it anyhow. I've had that happen more than once, not just to me, but I've seen alcoholic drinks served to minors when " virgin " drinks were ordered. Of course most of us can tell if there's alcohol in the drink but not always. I do like the taste of a Pina Colada and let's face it, the rum adds to the flavor. However, I don't need more than a couple of sips to enjoy the drink. And, my husband appreciates my generosity. Take care, Geri
Guest guest
Geri, I'm sure you already now that the liver is the organ responsible for changing everything you drink, stuff that would cause your body harm, it takes it and changes it to a form the body can use. This will only make the liver work harder than you normally want it to do. I know before that my doc. told me not to drink. All three of my Doc. BUT one said if you want to take a zip. It better be a good one, and he suggest once a year a zip. just a tiny weeny zip. WHY tease myself with something like that. LOL
Guest guest
, I don't enjoy feeling intoxicated. Never have. I don't even enjoy the taste of most alcoholic drinks, so not drinking is no big deal for me. I so rarely haved a few sips of the only alcoholic drinks that do taste good to me that it's hard to worry about them. Also, casino restaurants tend to water down their drinks so much that I often wonder if they do more than wave the bottle over the top of the glass. Ordering a rare drink is my way to have just a hint of a normal life again and sometimes I just feel like rebelling against the way my life has changed. I want to feel free to do anything I want to do, whether it's good for me or not. But, I wouldn't recommend that for everyone. Remember, I'm older and I've already had a pretty full life. I'm darned lucky I've gotten this far, considering some of the other risks I've taken and the law of averages. Truth is, because of rampant alcoholism in my immediate family, I'm pretty grim about drinking most of the time. Recently when my husband's step-mother followed my husband around pushing another glass of wine at him (he has a potential drinking problem but I'm so vigilant about it he gives up because I'm tougher and passionately anti-alcohol) I got angry and told her that she was not to insist he have another drink or I could guarantee I'd become very, very angry and would leave her house. The thing is, my Dad was an alcoholic but he died from heart failure years after he'd stopped drinking. One of my brothers was an alcoholic and he died from pancreatic cancer. Another brother neither drank nor smoked and was very careful about his health and he was murdered by a stranger. One of those random, horrible acts of violence you read about. Our oldest son also had an alcohol problems and he died 2 years after being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease. It's made me realize that in the end, anything can happen no matter how careful we are. Life is so fragile and good health is something we should treasure. We have to take care of ourselves within reason, but there are times when I just don't want to have to worry about these things. I've seen too much of how other things can reach out and get you and fear can rule your life. I won't do anything that will make me sick, though. I don't like feeling sick! How are you doing? Take care, Geri
Guest guest
, Forgot to add a P.S.: All of these people I mentioned except my one brother had smoked since they were teens and everyone warned them about the dangers of smoking. Guest guest
I've found that grape juice can be really good. I bought a bottle at a winery once and a number of my friends who could have drunk wine helped me finish the bottle! Either white or red grape juice looks good in a wine glass and no one can tell it's not wine so I don't feel so awkward. I think I prefer it to the non-alcoholic wines which I find to be too sweet. Guest guest
Hi Geri... The reason he brought the coffee was a defense mechanism...I am a bear without my first cup of coffee in the morning....LOL....tread lightly, don't talk, and stay out of my way...I recently went on a trip to Little Rock with some friends I meet on line. The first morning there, we were all sitting at the table, my best friend is chatty kathy in the morning. I picked up my coffee and left. I wanted to gag her. The next morning she only mouthed the words...I thanked her...but everyone laughed...it was funny... My Doctor did tell me to drink water only, or fruit juices. I explained my addiction in the morning and was told I could have 1 cup of decaf. So I cheat, but this is the only time I do. I have a question for everyone. Does you liver ever feel hot to you? I don't have the pain you all talk about but I sure do have the heat. You can put your hand over my lever and it is really hot. I have no fever, nor am I hot any where else. I am asking the doctor when I go my next visit. Any one else have this.. Have a good day, and remember...Laughter is the music of a happy heart, love is it's sustenance. Guest guest
Geri, The best non-alcoholic champagne I know about is called Fre' made by Sutter Homes and cost $4-5 per bottle. They serve it in some of the nicer restaurants or you can buy it in alot of the grocery stores now. It tastes like the real thing! Guest guest
Joan, I don't drink coffee for no reason except that I got so disgusted looking at dirty coffee pots at work I stopped drinking it years ago. However, I still enjoy a rare cup of good, rich coffee. My doctors haven't told me not to drink coffee or warned me about caffeine in any way, though I guess too much of it isn't so good for anyone. But, anything done to excess is probably not a good deal. What a nice husband, to bring you coffee in bed. My hubby brings me orange juice now that he's not working. I think it's his gentle way of hinting it's time for me to get up and get rolling! Take care, Geri
Guest guest
Hey all, My doctor said that non-alcoholic beers and wines, even though there is a trace, are okay. Just another example of how different doctors are seeing different patients and giving each on of us different advice. Also my Dr. said that caffenie is okay. When I was in the hospital, after my recent incident in the hospital I was able to drink Pepsi several days afterwards (although I had to send my father ooutside of Metro Hospital to buy pepsi since the whole hospital wass Coke products.) It was the one thing that I couldn't wait to have again after beginning to function after the coma. But along the lines as others, I still miss an occasional drink after work with my friends and this is especially true working in the restaurant biz. Also working for a national steakhouse it is hard to get around the staff wine tastings without tasting any of the products, but luckily all of the staff knows what I have been through and why I don't drink with them. WHAT I WOULDN'T GIVE TO HAVE ONE NICE GLASS OF WINE AFTER WORK ONE DAY! Peace
Guest guest
Barbara, I haven't tried grape juice, but it sounds like a good idea. I wonder if restaurants serve it? Once we were driving through France and stopped at a charming little roadside place. Sat in the garden and ordered lunch and my husband ordered a small bottle of wine. He commented on how good it was. I took a look at the label and saw that it said, " Sans Alcool. " Non-alcoholic! He didn't even know the difference and he likes to think he knows decent wine when he tastes it. We noticed that Europeans don't hesitate to dilute wine with water, incidentally, though " purists " in the US see that as sacrilege. I think it's a cultural thing with us and we view drinking as " fun " where over there it's often something only done appropriately, not for the sake necessarily of feeling " good " . But, there are many people who shouldn't drink at all, and not just people who have liver disease. It's also poison for anyone with an alcohol dependency and it distresses me when I see well-meaning (or mindless) people push drinks on someone they know should NOT drink. There are many alternatives to alcohol available now and they aren't glaringly obvious like Cola, etc. However, I do have a difficult time finding something available in a restaurant besides iced tea or sticky sweet lemonade. I wish more of them carried non-alcoholic wines but they're in the business to make money and I guess it's not profitable enough for them to consider. Guest guest
My Dr told me there is still a trace of alcohol in the non alcohol drinks. He didn't advise it. My problem is the appetite prednisone gives me. Leona M.
