Weaning off Cortef

I have been on cortef for over a year now- highest dose I tried was 40mg

(requested by a doctor to see if it resolved the anxiety- it did NOT). My

last lab (blood) showed " 23 " (it had been at '13' when my doc put me on cortef

as year ago).

He asked me to wean off the cortef as he doesn't feel that I need it; I am

having high blood pressure, rage, acne and still have anxiety. It has never

given me any energy- lately when I take it I fall asleep.

I am female. I am wondering if I am weaning 'correctly'.

I am currently at 7.5mg in the morning. I had been on 20mg and have been

weaning down 2.5mg every 5-7 days.

My doctor thinks I can just drop the 7.5mg dose but my thought is to drop it

2.5mg until I am done.

I am just noticing some 'weird' reactions... my hands feel numb off and on, I

have floaters in my eyes and now there seems like more, I am emotional (might

have to increase my estrogen)...

The best thing that has happened is I feel better in the afternoons with more

energy and I had been lightheaded and now that has gone away..

any suggestions?

Lori,

I don't know to many people off HC meds that could stay off them.

If you don't fix way your low like stress your adrenals will just get over

worked again.

Here is a link I helped make to a FAQ's on Adrenals in this is how to come off

HC meds. Also you might need some Preg. Cream to help keep your cortisol levels

up it is said to convert into cortisol it did for me.

Do labs test your hormones Preg. and Prog. is low try this cream.

Phil-

Thank you for the link on the cream.. I have never used preg. I have low DHEA

but have been told NOT to use it- which I never understood. Do you have a preg

cream without the DHEA or progesterone?

I rather do cream than shots, but applying cream each is sometimes bothersome.

So if HCG, doesn't lower my levels in a few months, I can try Preg.,

I am in process of finding yet another Endocrine doc. However has anyone used

Quest without a lab presription? Can you pay for the labs you want?

Not at Quest labs but you can get labs from Life at LabCorp.

http://www.lef.org/BloodTest/

If you go to Dr. 's site and get the complimentary 12-month subscription to

Life Extension magazine when you order your labs they will offer you a lower

price to join the club and your labs will cost less.
