i found this post rather interesting... my grand mal seizures began

*ONLY* after i began suffering from sleep apnea (not the obstructive kind)

for at least a month...

i just began seeing a Dr. Thadani, up at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, and when i

mentioned that i had " sleep apnea " he asked me who had diagnosed me... when

i said that *i* had decided i had apnea because my boyfriend told me (and

sometimes woke me from my sleep because)

of my choking gasping noises i'd make while asleep sometimes...

Thadani, literally, made that hideous dismissive motion with his

hand and told me, " eh, it's probably just a seizure " (!!)...

as if me and my boyfriend don't know the difference.

i'd like to know if anyone else on this list has noticed a connection

between their seizures and their suffering from the apnea...

and have any of you noticed certain behaviors that make the apnea

worse?... or better??

,

Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is sleep apnea? Is that

like having a seizure during your sleep?

well, it depends on the kind of apnea you have...

if you have the obstructive kind, it's my understanding that you snore

*very* loudly while asleep.. and this kind of apnea can be cured (i think)

by some minor surgery to remove the flap of skin that is getting in the way

of your breathing...

the kind of apnea i have, seems to be at the mercy of my central nervous

system... certain drugs seem to make it worse: i.e. valium and co.

i've noticed that while i'm falling asleep, there are times that

even while i'm still awake, i'll find myself having to *remember* to

breathe, and i'll find myself breathing slower and slower...

sometimes, i'll wake up in the middle of the night gasping for my

breath, as if i'd been holding it for a long time...

and my boyfriend has woken me from my sleep because i'm gasping

and choking while asleep....

i've noticed a correlation between my eating a lot of dairy (or too much

dairy near to bed-time) and my having an apnea attack...

also, it's very common for me to have several nights of apnea before

i have a grand mal.. and also, the apnea and the grand mal are often

coinciding with the onset of my menses...

however, i haven't had a menstrual period since late december...

i'm 29, so i'd *like* to think this isn't menopause ;-)

i *have* been having the apnea and grand mals (about 2-3 attacks a month)...
