Hello Dabs:

I have been on IV meds for three sessions so far....first two

@56 days and last fall @120 days......thru a Picc line in my

arm. I would flush 5cc saline before infusing and 5cc after I

completed infusing. When I had the 120 days it was with

Rocephin AND Vancomycin..(Plus orals also each session)..I had two separate

IV bags and I

flushed inbetween also....It is not necessary to use Heparin in

a Picc line.....unless you run into trouble infusing....but you should

be able to keep the line clear by saline flushes. Its important

to not let the bags run totally empty....cause blood could back

up thru the line....and its the blood that could coagulate and

block the Picc line. Also...I have heard of some folks having

blood drawn thru the picc line.....THIS IS A NO NO.....it

should be only utilized to infuse your meds. I had weekly labs

done to monitor my peaks and troughs of Vanco and my liver

function.

If you are referring to a PORT which is surgically implanted

in the chest....then you will have to flush Heparin for that one!

I never needed to get the Port....even tho I had one doc tell me

that since I was so heavy it would be impossible to get the Picc

in correctly. I never had a problem getting it inserted....I drank

plenty of water beforehand....and it slipped right in!!! I had

my weekly labs done on my other arm. The only problem I ever

encountered was a rash that I had surrounding the picc line entry

but......it was not the picc line...it was my own allergy to the tapes

and adhesive.....I cannot use a bandaid now without developing a

rash!!! Hope I helped and not confused more.

hugs,

Thanks for the responses. I had a mid-clav.line in and iv nurse said only

flush saline5cc and heparin5cc after abx.

Well line clogged and I E mailed Byron,(thought he was an MD) and played

around with it for 3 hours .

Today they pulled it after draino type IV med failed.

Whole line was clogged.

Tues. I get a PICC and LLMD told me to flush with heparin after abx and again

at night, and like does, whenever I get blood " back up " in line. oh

well........

Hi Dabs,

I flush my regular IV heparin lock line with saline and heparin after abx

and whenever I see too much blood in the line.

sorry I have to disagree here...when you flush with 5 ccc Heparinized

saline....you are leaving a few cc. in the tubing itself...this way when

blood backs up it does not clot in the tubing..a very important reason to use

the heparinized flush.....(Heparin 100 units per ml) a very low dose...b

have you ever seen blood in your picc line?? i used to at very odd

times...perhaps they have come out with a new catheter since then..mine was a

Bard brand..

What brand is yours??

..please ask him about it...this might be a new development I haven't seen any

posts anywhere on....would love to know about it...

..one less syringe a day...over the course of weeks would have saved my

husband and I, 156 invasions to our picc lines...

wanna laugh...I still have heparin and saline syringes in my fridge....a year

later....:) B

I had a PICC line put in on tuesday and they told me to flush with at least

5cc heparin.

They also showed me how blood can be drawn from picc for testing. My PICC has

no little flap to inhibit backflow like rosas does. Mine is Arrow 4 french

I don't use Heparin in my PICC line. My nurse explained why only N.S. is

used. He says the PICC line has a little double flap on it like a

particular type of coin purse. It opens when the fluid goes through and

closes down when the fluid stops. Therefore no blood can flow backwards

down the PICC line.

It is a BARD. I flush with 10 cc of N.S. before and after the Rocephin.

How long have you had yours in? maybe new kinds out there.

I have only had my PICC line since Monday. Speaking of which, I need a

better cover than their stretch stocking. I know people recommended tube

socks but how about something for fatso, flubby arms like mine? hehehe
