Gottesman, MD NIH, 1 Center Drive, Bldg 1 #126 Bethesda, MD 20892-0148 Lyme Disease Constituency Groups Gentlemen: Hundreds of us who have read your letter regarding Dr. C. Steere's protested lecture at the NIH on November 3 seek your help in establishing a forum that will fulfill the NIH's mission for " a better understanding of the public's concern, " in this case about Lyme, the fastest growing infectious disease in the U.S.A. Our common goal could be reached during a balanced discussion--at your invitation--between Dr. Steere, and those physicians and patients who feel that Dr. Steere and his colleagues, because they claim that Lyme disease is overdiagnosed and and overtreated, may be responsible for sentencing perhaps millions to a lifetime of suffering. Those in our camp live in what Dr. J. J. Burrascano calls " the real world of Lyme disease. " The two sides were revealed in 1993 at a U.S. Senate Hearing during which Dr. Steere was accused by Senator Metzenbaum of saying " exactly the opposite " of Dr. Burrascano. Your colleagues may not be aware that the NIH is infected from within by its former Lyme disease program officer McSweegan, an " obsessed " federal employee who, as reported in the Washington Post on May 22, 1997, was charged by his supervisor, La Montagne, with insubordination. McSweegan is still allowed, on his personal web site which identifies him as " a federal scientist, " to discredit those he perceives as enemies, and to hire a lawyer to " protect his constitutional freedom of speech. " McSweegan was also instrumental in conning the Sabin Vaccine Institute into awarding his crony Steere a Gold Medal for " discovering the pathogenesis of Lyme disease, " and for " translational research--from bench to bedside. " For the record, Dr. Steere did not discover the pathogenesis of Lyme disease, and his bench work provides test scores that are often the opposite of results from other labs. If you gentlemen were present on November 3, you may agree that no Lyme disease patient could have found Dr. Steere to be " personable, sensitive and responsive to the issues. " The help we need, and your " dedication to studying disease and identifying new therapies " may be in vain if what many of us fear is a cover-up of Lyme disease comes from higher up. S.
