Guest guest
Hi Kate, I had the same thing happen to me when I went on Lexoxyl. It was eventually determined that I was allergic to the colorant used in the pills. When I switched to the same dosage on Synthroid, the problem went away. Is there a generic version of the Cytomel that you could try? That might rule out if your hives were a reaction to inert ingredients in your meds, as opposed to the medications themselves. I can't blame you for not wanting to give up something that finally makes you feel better! Guest guest
I think you are too little cytomel. You might try Armour, so you don't have to mix and match T4 and T3. Benedryl will suppress the histamine reaction for some temporary relief. However, you need to remove the underlying cause. If this is an allergic reaction to something in the Cytomel, and you continue to take it, the intensity could build until you close your windpipe or go into anaphylactic shock. You really should not perform such an experiment on yourself without letting your physician in on it. He can prescribe more effective antihistamines, Atarax, for example, or provide an epi-pen in case it does get out of hand. Chuck

It may not be allergic, or at least not to Cytomel. A lot of us on this list found out we were hypothyroid after recurring bouts of hives. However, you don't want to risk testing this idea without a physician's supervision. Food allergies can be dangerous. One strategy might be to cut out the Cytomel to see if the hives eventually clear up. If they do, try reintroducing it (with your doctor's approval) to see if they recur. Then, you will have your answer. Alternatively, you might get him to simply increase your T4 dose. Chuck

My doctor had never heard of an association between hypoT and hives. He seemed to think it was most likely something else, but lots of people on this, and other lists, have reported the same thing, an incidence of hives just before the diagnosis of hypoT. Hives also seem to be associated with stomach hyper-acidity. The docs say hyper-acidity is " specific " for histamine. This is also typical of food allergies. I did find out that foods rich in arginine (mostly nuts) would trigger or aggravate ongoing attacks. Several viruses, including the herpes family, have a high requirement for arginine and seem to be stimulated by it. Thus, if your hypothyroidism is being caused by a virus that triggers an autoimmune attack directed toward thyroid, avoiding nuts and legumes might help, or at least reduce the associated hives. The reason I was diagnosed in the first place is that my hives had stopped when I avoided all types of nuts, so I quit taking antihistamines. However, the side effects of the antihistamines (lethargy, sleeping too much, brain fog) seemed to persist days after the drugs should have disappeared. That told me something else was wrong. Since going on Synthroid, the hives have not recurred. That might mean that the hives were a result of low T3. Then again, the viral attack might have coincidentally ended, about the same time that thyroid function was totally quashed. No one knows which is cause or effect, since the medicos haven't even noticed an association. Chuck

I broke out in terrible hives around my neck, face, chest, and shoulders on Synthroid ... they said it was a reaction to the red dye colourant in the pills. I went to Unithroid, and haven't had any reoccurances. Blessings, Miana
Guest guest
Too much vco on the skin (and maybe internally) really dries up the skin. Apply only moderate amount. Allergic reaction? I have recently upped my allowance of VCO to approximately 7-8 TBsps a day. This includes the amounts I eat straight (~ 4 Tbsps) as well as cook with (~ another 3-4 Tbsps). I have noticed my lips are swollen and very dry. Is this a reaction to the CO? I noticed a year ago on this site someone by the name of " edi " posted something about a swollen tongue. Could these 2 instances be related? My friend showed my Dr D'adamo's book " Eat right 4 your type " . I am blood type O and I believe he says coconut is off limits due to a particular lectin. Anyone have any information? Thanks in advance, Martie
Guest guest
I have found VCO drying as well. I make every effort to drink a lot of water. Swollen lips reflect a condition of distended intestines (upper lip -> small intestine, lower lip -> large intestine). I see this as a case of a good thing in the wrong quantity. I think if you just cook with the VCO and don't eat any additional straight, you may find the condition regulates itself. No food, however excellent, overrides the need of the body for balance.
