Hi all, I have to pass this info on for you on jaw pain!

I had chronic jaw pain which included ear ache and it got to the stage no

one could do anything with it so Morphine was the go! I was in a lot of

pain!

I finally found a chinese doc who manipulated the jaw muscles including

those in the back of my throat and in the first visit had stopped the pain

to a manageable level and in the second visit I had it no longer. He also

used ultrsound on the part where the jaw bones move from.

Each time now it starts to even get stiff I massage all the muscles on both

the outside and the inside and it has never been as bad!

Hope this is of some help.

:

Regarding your jaw pain, it is arthritis and about the only thing is pain

meds. I used to have it so bad also. Now I just cannot chew gum. I learned

a method of applying heat from my other group. They are called rice socks.

Just take a sock and fill it with rice and sew up the end of it. When you

need heat treatments pop the sock into the microwave for about three minutes

and it puts out moist heat. It works wonders. Try that on your jaw.

Hi to you today:

I read your email about jaw pain. I you sure it is from arthritis or could

you have TMJ. I had TMJ the same time I had arthritis and I had to see a

dentist for an apparatus to wear while I slept. It took a little while but

that was the only way it would clear up. You should see a dentist, he would

take xrays to tell if it is TMJ.

Good luck and keep in touch.

Hello. I would definitely get a second opinion, if possible from an ear nose

and throat Dr., TN, your first diagnosis is usually chronic. It is worse than

TMJ. You usually are treated with the drug he recommended and pain

medication. It is very painful. As for the abscessed tooth you should have

had an x-ray unless there was an obvious abscess on your gum. If there is you

would know it, you would be able to feel it. I agree with your husband get a

third opinion. Good luck,

, I'm not sure I'd wait until Tuesday. Why not call your regular

doctor and/or dentist today and see what they think is going on? I'm

really sorry that you are in so much pain.

The swelling you describe is a big concern. Please call.

Don't worry about the dishes!

Hi Lynn

That could be that TMJ problem. Temporal mandibular joint, I think.

Anyways, where your jaws connect it doesn't match up quite right, so gives pain,

can

be jaw pain, ear pain, and terrible headaches. Can you go to a dentist to be

evaluated? Cary

Hi Lynn, my niece in Ohio had this problem and eventually had to go to a dentist

to have the jaw injected. Although this is a difficult place to reach since it

is done inside the mouth and my niece told me it was very painful, she has never

had the pain come back and that was 3 years ago. Don't want to scare you but I

couldn't not tell you. Ruth said after going through so much pain to the point

she could hardly open her mouth to put food in, let alone chew, she would have

it done again.

Hi,

Has anyone suffered pain in their jaw right by their ears. I am

having a lot of pain with this. I know the ra is in my jaw but now it

is really painful. It is very hard to chew but since my diet is so

limited it is not a really big deal when it comes to chewing. Maybe it

is time for the rice sock. That has helped before. But I was just

wondering if anyone else had it bother their ear.

Thanks,

Hi Lynn,....I had this problem about four years ago, before being

diagnosed with RA. I worked the midnight shift, it came on just all

of a sudden, and by the time I got home, I was crying. I was in so

much pain, I can still remember it today. I went to a ear specialist

and he told me I had TMJ. He also asked if I chewed gum, which I did

quite a bit at the time. He gave me some pain med, I believe

Tylenol, and I quit chewing gum, and never had the problem again. I

had pain in the ear area, and I thought I had problems with my ear,

but it wasn't. Take care, and I hope you feel better soon, Tawny

PS:you might try a heating pad, that helped me quite a bit

I do think it might have something to do with RA, don't you. He was

an ear specialist, and didn't know I had RA. He told me if I didn't

quit chewing gum, I could get arthritis in my jaw, can you

imagine,lol Just a thought,....

I had this problem last year. It was very painful and made it difficult

to eat. I had just recently started on Enbrel and figured that it

should help the TMJ if it was caused by RA. Eventually, it did help,

and thankfully, it didn't take very long.

I remember a had an awful time with TMJ. a, is it better?

Hi Cary,

Thank you for your help. I think you are right. After I read what you

wrote I

remember I did talk to the dentist about it some months ago. I have to have a

lot of

dental work done so maybe I can bring it up then.

Thank You,

Hi June,

The injection doesn't sound like funny but right now I would do almost

anything. I started watching my grandchildren and it has throw me in a bad

flare. I am trying to work with it all. I am going to ask the Rheumy about the

jaw on Monday. I do have a dental appointment for the end of March. Thank you

for your help, I appreciate everything. How are you feeling?

Hi,

Thank you for your note. I never chew gum, right now I think that

would hurt to much. I made a rice sock and the heat felt good. I am

hoping it all settles down in a couple of days. I see the Rheumy on

Monday, so I will see what he says.

Thanks again for your help,

Your right Sue, a had a terrible time with TMJ. I just wish the TMJ and

Ra would all settle down. I have been trying to go for walks, plus watch my

grandchildren. Ages 6, 1, 5weeks, I just have to get use to babysitting.

Thank you for your note. I hope you are doing well.

Hi Cary,

I was surprised at all the notes. It is nice to know that so many people

care. I saw the Rheumy today. Seems to be a combination of TJM and the RA.

He wants me to up the metho.. I was a little unhappy with him, because he

didn't seem to interested in what I was saying. This is very odd for him, he

usually cares a lot. Maybe it was just an off day.

Hi Lynn-

I get that feeling with mine at times, too. It's frustrating, because on one

hand, he's human and should be allowed to have an off day, on the other hand,

NOT DURING MY APPT! lol...........I find my rheumy's attention is worst

during a " pain " conversation. And my rheumy is highly recommended in this area!

Thank goodness my regular doc is more compassionate about such things.

Your right the Rheumy has the right to have a bad day, but hopefully not on my

shift. Anyway I am not too upset about it all. He is a wonderful doctor. I

just

hope it doesn't happen again. Maybe it was the pain thing, my RA has been a lot

worse. Possibly he was hoping not to hear that. Like you I have a wonderful

primary. I am always afraid he is going to retire. I started going to him over

40

years ago, so we are also friends. We email jokes to each other. Right now I

am

not helping the RA. I have been trying to go for walks and I have been watching

my

grandchildren. Just something I have to get use to and do. Hope you are having

a

good day.

Thanks you for your note,

It happened to me. However, I don't know if it was from the RA. Now that I

think about it, it could have been. Anyway, I went to the dentist and he made

me the appliance and I wore it at night for 3 Months and it worked. The pain

finally went away and has never come back.

Hi Renate, I also have the jaw pain from time to time. I was told it

is called,(TMJ) temporomandibular joint, which is a form of arthritis.

Yes, I did, but just for a brief time, thank goodness. I had always

wondered what TMJ was. Well, I found out. It's not any fun at all! The

jaw is after all a joint. Eventually, my meds made the pain go away.
