Guest guest
I too have had this and really badly about 18 months ago I could barely open my mouth the joint kept clicking and I was in agony with the pain, periodically it comes back but not so badly. My doctor gave me a course of anti inflammatories which I cannot take long term as I have had duodenal ulcers in the past but I took them short term with Zoton and they calmed the inflammation down. It was really unpleasant. Judith [ ] Re: Jaw pain > Hi Renate, I also have the jaw pain from time to time. Guest guest
I know I'm a little late on this but I'm a lurker and don't usually post. This is an area that I felt some of my biggest frustration since I was diagnosed with RA 7 months ago. The area where my biggest flare ups would happen is my jaw. I was the same and couldn't eat, chew, etc. I kept telling my rheumy and he basically ignored it! (don't worry, currently in the process of trying to find a new rheumy who will pay attention) I asked my dentist one day when I was in for a cleaning and he said I do have TMJ and fitted me for a bite guard. That has helped a lot. Apparently, if your teeth do not align perfectly then while you sleep your jaw will continue to grind until it feels that they are aligned. Usually the only way this happens naturally is to wear your teeth down to a dangerous level. In the meantime, you put so much stress on your jaw muscles that someone without RA would be in pain. Ours is magnified! The bite guard acts as an artificial filler of sorts and helps to line up your teeth. With it in we don't put as much stress on the muscle. If the guard doesn't work then yes, surgery is one of the next steps but for many people the guard is enough. Also, I saw that someone suggested not chewing gum, sticking to soft foods or liquids when it flares and basically treating it tenderly like any of our other joints that hurt. Sounds like good advice to me! Hope this helps some! Guest guest
I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't chew gum! This is what I do since I quit smoking about 10 years ago. But when I had TMJ for that thankfully brief period, I had to give it up, LOL. Guest guest
That's one of the strangest things about this disease in my opinion... the way the pain and inflammation move about. When I was first diagnosed at 16 it only afflicted my left foot and ankle. The " flare " lasted forever... at least it seemed that way at the time. Now that it has come out of remission a zillion years later it hit me in my knees and hands... strange. It's been two years since it came back and just recently has popped up in my left foot and ankle again. and Vera, you seem to be so supportive to each other... a great example of marriage. Guest guest
has RA and when we lived in northern Arizona, where it is cold in the winter, he would sometimes call me from work and ask me to have something soft for dinner as his jaw joints were swollen and it was hard for him to chew. I have OA and sometimes my jaws get painful. I never chew gum for fear of making my jaws hurt. Vera -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Guest guest
Lynn ~ When I had my heart attack I had what felt like a bat hit me across my left jaw................I had gotten up to pee in the middle of the night, and it happened while I was walking into the bathroom. NO chest pain at all, no numbness in my arm ..........no other symptoms. I would bet yours is TMJ from everything you have been through. I am only telling you this because I want you to be very aware, heart attacks in women are different and there may be no chest pain or anything related to what you would think would be heart related. I believe that relaxing best you can and some jaw massage like Lynda said would be good for you. I was told from my orthapedic that ice was always better to reduce inflammation as heat would feel good but increase inflammation. Hope you feel better ! ! Guest guest
Lynn, I used to have jaw pain that was associated with TMJ, and going to the doctor for that was one of the scariest times I have ever gone to the doctor! I would say wait it out, as my TMJ issues cleared up on their own. But only you can determine how bad it is. I think I had TMJ issues mainly due to having had braces as a teen. Right before I got married, I had terrible issues with my jaw not opening very wide, and it was painful. I had cracking and crunching in my jaw area and I didn't know what to do. It lasted for about a year when I finally decided to see a specialist about it. This guy wanted to jump right in and do surgery, and he seemed eager to help me. I wasn't getting a good feeling about it at all, as I had been through several dental surgeries with my braces (I had an extra set of wisdom teeth-- I was told I was a rare kid). But being the innocent that I was, I was led like cattle to the slaughter, and I did all he told me to. The first thing he wanted me to do was an MRI of my head, and that is what saved my butt. One of the questions on the MRI questionnaire before undergoing it was "Are you pregnant?" I had just found out I was actually! So they would not do the MRI, and when I told the dental surgeon, he was clearly disappointed. I found out years later that the TMJ surgery that he would have done would have turned into a nightmare, as they were using the teflon jaw joint. Those teflon implants disintegrated in the person's jaw, leaving them nearly incapacitated and unable to eat. It was a national lawsuit...and you can find stories of suffering on the net from these poor people. All I can say is that God was watching out for me! Especially since I had wanted to time my pregnancy so that I wouldn't give birth in December, but God timed it so that I wouldn't go through this surgery! My daughter was born December 6th. My jaw pain and all my TMJ issues healed on their own. I didn't do anything special. But I cannot chew gum. I won't chew anything especially hard like taffy, but other than that, everything got better without medical intervention. Just be careful, whatever you do. I know these doctors may mean well, but sometimes they are just in the way. You will have to make up your own mind about it depending on how bad things get. Guest guest
Lynn, After an auto accident, I had to have jaw surgery. And neck surgery. So, I always am aware of the jaw problems. I try to massage those joints when I feel the stiffness and pain and it really helps. I have to wear a splint at night now, which I did not have to do prior to the accident. I dodged a wooden pallet that flew off a big truck. It was the dodging it that caused the problems, I probably had my jaw clenched. This was frightening, but it went away...just like all the other strange symptoms that we all seem to get. One of the other symptoms that I get is that it seems like my mouth is leaking...just on the right side...it is a phantom leak!!!!! Guest guest
Lynn, When I still had implants, I developed a very bad case of TMJ. I had never had any dental issues before in my life. My jaw hurt terribly, made strange clicking noses, caused headaches and ear trouble. It was one of the many problems I had while with implants. Funny thing is, the TMJ specialist I saw asked me if I had implants and then told me there is a high incidence of TMJ among women with implants. That was the first time the idea that the implants were causing any of my symptoms came up. I credit that doc with starting me on the path to discovery and ultimately liberation from those bad puppies. After explant, the jaw pain went away. I used to use hot and cold packs, lots of upper body stretching, stayed away from crunchy foods and gum. There are other things that can help if it gets worse. Guest guest
Makes sense Bindi. Thanks for the advice. It is actually feeling much better today. Are you feeling better? I know a few weeks ago you were having a bad week. I hope it has subsided. Thanks again, Lynn > > Lynn, > I did a lot of research about TMJ when I had it and discovered that it is often part of a systemic response to trauma (which is perhaps why it happens a lot to people who have implants). Guest guest
Dede, I will pray that your labs come back normal! I do pray for you each night. If I feel well enough to go to church tomorrow we our pastor asks for prayer requests outloud. I have mentioned my uncle's father who recently had two strokes and parkisons, they thought he was going to die. He is actually getting a tiny bit better, taking speech therapy. I believe there is power in numbers. So if you don't mind, I won't mention your name, but I will ask that the congregation prays that you can regain enough of your health to undergo surgery. I would love to have everybody join me in praying for you. I really want you to get healthy enough to get the implants out. I hate that you are fighting an uphill battle. Your positive energy radiates and I am sure it helps to make you feel better even when you don't. Speaking of flowers. My wonderful family and friends sent/brought me so many flowers. I got four different arrangements, plus a friend brought me some magazines to read while I am resting in bed. Oh, and the tulips in my yard have bloomed and are beautiful!! Once I feel up to par I want to get a big planter and fill it with some colorful flowers. Love, Lynn > > Lynn ~ > Thank you , you are so sweet ! How are you feeling today?
