After surgery

Well, I am back from ankle fusion surgery. Glad to report that my

doctor thought it was a success and pronounced that I was doing very

well. I must admit that I was in serious denial before going into

surgery - sometimes that is better. It is a much bigger deal than i had

imagined, but glad to say that I think the worst of it is now behind me.

I ended up spending two nights in the hospital. My doc said that the

insurance company was balking at paying for the second night if all i

was on was percoset. he said that if I was on morphine then they would

pay for a second night. " Morphine sounds good, " I said. Anyway, it was

just as well because the second day is the the most painful when the

anesthesia wears off as do the two nerve blocks they do prior to

surgery. So a combination of morphine and percoset got me through the

night. A fine combination, if I do say so myself.

So I am in a half soft cast to allow for swelling for about a week, and

then I get a hard cast for the next 2-3 weeks. I cannot stress how glad

I am that I was in pretty good shape muscle wise before surgery. Having

upper body strength and muscles in my good leg have vastly helped my

ability in getting around, getting in and out of the bathtub, in and

out of bed, etc. And I think that being in overall good shape just

helps make the recovery in general go quicker.

Thanks for all of your good wishes prior to my surgery. I'm looking

forward to walking normally and without pain soon!
