Guest guest
Hello Jan, My name is I am 56 years old with CMT and also have severe Arthritis in my knees. I was scheduled to have a knee joint replacement in September and I chickened out. The surgeon has asked me to reconsider and suggested January for the surgery. I too am very skeptical about the complications. although I am in constant pain (used to take Vioxx, like many others). I am just afraid I will not recover. I have already had the arthroscopic procedure on my knee and it didn't help. I also have a problem with general anaesthetic, which I know is true for many with CMT. I really know how you feel and wish I could help. I am not sure how to make this decision. Warmest Regards,
Guest guest
Jan, I say go for it. I too have CMT. November 19 was one year since my Bilateral Knee Replacement. The CMT made recovery a little longer than someone without, but not much. Just remember to excercise, excercise, excercise. I will tell you that it is painful, but the results are amazing. Today, I am a walkin fool. I do water arobics three times a week, I also do 15 minutes, at 135 steps a minute on a NUStep machine, and 20 minutes on a treadmill. The day after Thanksgiving, I stood in a store line for 1 hour. Feel free to e-mail me if you want more info. Or just encouragement. Guest guest
A recent Mayo clinic study indicated that 37% of persons older than 55 who had knee or hip replacement surgery lost cognitive ability. You many wish to get the study, which I do not have, and review it before going ahead with your knee joint replacement surgery. Also while it is not relevant to now, in 20-40% of the time arthroscopic surgery does not work in persons older than 55. Chuck
Guest guest
Hi all, I am new to this board and thankful to you all for being here. I'll give you a little background info on me, and my experiences with RA. I am a 43 yr. old female, diagnosed with RA 13 yrs. ago. I'll spare you all the laundry list of medications/side effects. (I'm currently taking ketoprofen and prednisone 2x day)....and that helps some...but morning-evening pain/stiffness still persist. I'm 5'3 " ....125lbs. and had orthoscopic surgery on my left knee 3 yrs ago., and will be having total knee replacement in the very near future.(appt. for consult with orthopedic surgeon is sept. 7th)I'd like to know if anyone has had this surgery, and if so....do you have any advice? With orthoscopic surgery I was up and walking without crutches in a few days. Yes, the first few days were uncomfortable, but it definitely helped with pain and swelling for a while anyway. I have had aspiration/cortisone regularly off and on for the past 12 yrs. and know I can't put this off any longer. Anyone else been through anything similar? Advice? Thank you all in advance. Guest guest
Sherrie, Take care of yourself...did they give you a circulating ice wrap? I am seeing my orthopedic surgeon next week and will be having knee replacement shortly after. (Unless they've perfected this "shock absorber" I keep hearing rumours about....(IF ONLY)....well, hope you are getting help while you are healing. Stay positive and thanks for sharing all. shelly smiegal <shelsmieg2000@...> wrote: I hope that you are not in any pain. I am sorry to hear that you will need a knee replacement.
