Hi , I found eliminating certain foods to be very beneficial in my

fight with RA. If you are interested and wanting to try to locate the foods

that irritate your system I'd be happy to help you in this area.

Hi -

I have read that as well - and would like to hear more info about what foods to avoid. Even though I'm fairly controlled right now with meds, there is always room for improvement.

You can send to my personal email address if that works better.

Thanks!

Hi Margi, there are the obvious foods that are just poison to any body,

Sugar. white flour, salt, caffienne, any chemical additives.

But if you want to get to the absolute root of your health challenge I recommend to others they try a detox diet for 30 days.

The benefit of this is for the 30 days you are elliminating a lot of the foods that could possible be irritating your system therefore after the 30 days you slowly introduce foods back and by doing this you learn which foods your individual body has problems tollerating. As well you have detoxified your body and this usually helps most symptoms of RA.

There is no one that can tell you for sure which foods will be the worst for you.........you will know this when you try to reintroduce them. In fact it's interesting when a person first elliminates a food that causes the most problems, our bodies go through a withdrawal period........As much as the food is damaging our body, our body does not want to give it up without some fight.

If you are interested I can send you a copy of the detox diet. It is slightly restricting but being that it's summer time, it's very easy to get through.

I have heard about detoxing before, however, I am diabetic and control it by diet, no meds, no insulin. So I can only have 45 carbs a meal. I don't eat much sugar, but have to admit, I'm a coffee lover. I also don't use much salt, if any. So I'm sort of there already in some regards, do I really have to give up coffee? I already had to give up ice cream! And chocolate! It's bad enough having R.A., but then I can't even eat what I want. I've never been overweight except for maybe 10 pounds - so am not a typical diabetic, but my father and grandfather are also diabetic, so must have gotten their genes.

So I don't think a detox would work for me, but let me know, if you know differently.

Thanks for the info!

P.S. - I can actually have a little ice cream or sugar, but tend to eat more meat, cheese, and eggs. All foods I do eat have to be counted in my total carb count per meal, 150 carbs a day. If anyone wants to lose weight, go on my diet! I don't go up 10 lbs anymore! Dorey <ddorey@...> wrote:

I disagree with on "there are the obvious foods that are just poison to any body, Sugar. white flour, salt, caffienne, any chemical additives." These might be common poisons for some people but I think other people tolerate these well and have trouble with other food sensitivities. I do agree that a detox diet is the only way to see if you have any food sensitivities but I don't have the discipline to try that at this stage. I would be more inclined to use it if my medications were not working well for me. God bless.

I'm not sure what to say with you being diabetic. But the foods you say you eat most of are all foods that could very well be a problem. Red meat for some is poison (not me thankfully) Dairy has been shown to be very bad for many people, with it being too hard to digest. And eggs could be another one so you see I don't know specifically which foods you react to, that's where the ellimination diet comes in, and you, paying close attention to exactly how you feel for the 24 hours after trying each food.

You ask about coffee. Coffee (caffienne) robs the body of the ability to absorb nutrition, specially calcium. So if you drink more than one cup of coffee a day I would cut down. Of course on a detox diet you cut it out completely. As well caffienne is a stimulant that decreases the bodies ability to handle stress.

I read all the time about people saying they don't like vegetables. If not eating vegetables, where do you get your nutrition? Fruit is good in moderation but we need vegetables every day. Without vegetables we do not get enough enzymes in our diet to properly digest the other foods we eat. Poor digestion is the number one suspect for things ranging from allergies to any other auto immune disorder you can think of.

And I do sympathize with you for having to deal with Diabetes on top of RA, it's tough sometimes always watching what you can and can't eat.

Thanks - there isn't much else to eat though! I eat mostly tuna, chicken and fish, not much red meat. Cheese and eggs are also recommended for diabetics as they are low in carbs. Its hard to find anything to eat with my diet - I can't eat a lot of bread, rice, pasta, all of which used to be my favorite foods. I eat veggies, but could never live on just veggies - I need protein - so tend to go for tuna, chicken and fish, quite often. When I eat salmon, I swear it helps my R.A. - must be the fish oils as I have read that can help as well.

I think all

Thanks,

Hi -

I have read that as well - and would like to hear more info about what foods to avoid. Even though I'm fairly controlled right now with meds, there is always room for improvement.

You can send to my personal email address if that works better.

Hi all,

I am also a diabetic and I have rheumatoid and osteoarthritis and degenerative joint disease, pinched nerves, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea ( of which I have been on CPAP for about four or five years now) and I can't tell any difference in my sleep. I have a very hard time going to sleep and then once asleep staying asleep. I also have fibromyalgia and I hurt all over my body.

I recently almost died back on June 1st. My hubby came home and found me unconscious and I would only open my eyes. The pain clinic doctor which I had been sent to had put me on morphine 30 mg twice a day and then I got off it myself and decided to go back on it and this time he put me on 60mg.twice daily and I DID NOT ASK FOR HIM TO RAISE IT. Anyway I was taking over 18 different kinds of medication, ( I also have restless legs syndrome and now my arms are flinging about also). It all built up in my system and the fact that I went on a binge( I could not control myself) of eating a gallon of ice cream a day and sometimes drinking a lot of milk and eating cookies). That's enough to kill anyone, but my body was not getting rid of the morphine and it just kept building up and then I got a urinary tract infection, plus I aspirated and got aspiration pneumonia and so I just went unconscious. He called my mom who is a nurse and she told him to tell me that if I did not respond to him he was going to call the EMS. Well, I did not respond so she said then call them and I will meet you at the hospital. They ended up sending me to Austin, Texas ( I live in Llano, Texas 75 miles west of Austin) to Brackenridge Hospital and it was around 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. before I came to. When I came to I was praying God please don't let me die, then I was thinking they think I am dead and I tried to hit with my hand on the ER bed and then I was thinking they are going to take me to the funeral home and ( the undertaker here) is going to take my blood out, please God let them see I am alive. Then the doctor said to me Hi and I said Hi and then he said do you know where you are and I said no, and he told me and then he asked me what happened. I do not remember anything except that I had taken my meds before my hubby left for work. He told me that I had told him I was not feeling right. That I felt funny and was sick to my stomach. He called me at 11:30 but he said I was very groggy ( but the meds made me that way), and he told me that when he was leaving I told him if something happened to me to tell our three sons I love them and our eight grandchildren that I love them. That is all so very scary to me and almost dying is a feeling that you just don't get over. I am very thankful that I am a Christian and I was ready if I was to die. I am also very very thankful to God for letting me live. I know that he has something for me to do or he would not have left me here on planet earth.

I hope that I have not bored you all to death with my story, but I have been wanting to share but I just couldn't write about it until now. I am no longer on all those medications but I still have to take some but I am only taking arthritis strength 3 tablets every eight hours then 3 more and then wait another eight hours. Two do not help me and my rheumatoid doc told me it would be ok to take that many at once but no more and only six in a 24 hour period. My mind is a lot clearer now and I can stay awake all day but that still does not help me to sleep well. I need sleep so very bad because I need to reach that 4th stage so my body can heal itself. I am taking Humeria and Methotrexate and Lucovoran CA and Sulfizne for my arthritis.

Take care all of you and I hope that we can become friends. If any of you would like to write to me to my own email addy it is txkat@.... I would love to get to know you all.
