No, they don't have to be combined with methotrexate. A lot of people can't and won't take methotrexate. I talked to a 40 year old man in the doc's office this morning. He's had RA since he was 20. He took methotrexate for a while and it virtually destroyed his liver. So he's on Enbrel now without the methotrexate. I can't take methotrexate and the doc has never said it has to be combined if you're taking Remicade, Humira or Enbrel.
