Guest guest
I find that kids take on the attitude of parents. I have been a life long candy eater and sugar junkie. I had life long acne that has only cleared up now that I'm making real strides to eliminate the high fructose corn sugar. Never knew it was related to HFCS. I've cut back by 90%-95% now. I replaced even catsup with organic made with sugar not HFCS. Not perfect but better. That candy is poison in my opinion. There is a killer recipe for peanut butter cups in Silverstone's Vegan cookbook and other vegan treat recipes (highly recommended). I'm not vegan but like to read books to get veggie and healthy inspiration. They are better than Reeces and you can sub the can sugar for xylitol or half and half depending on the child's tolerance to sugar. You can experiment making home made Carmels with organic milk for Carmel apples (so much better) and rice crispy treats with organic gluten free cereal at the store and my own marshmallows with xylitol not HFCS. Kids can be trained to recognize how crappy that stuff makes them feel and how lucky they are to get homemade. Meanwhile, it's still fun to go out and collect candy. Loved the idea about buying the good treats with the crap (and some stores take donations of candy for the soldiers overseas). Although that can backfire with 'why do you want to poison the soldiers?' LOL
Guest guest
Please don't send all that gooey, gummy candy to the soldiers! It is a nice idea, but I'm sure their dental hygeine is limited in some areas and you are putting them at risk for cavities (think... would you want to be responsible for mercury laden amalgams going into a young person's mouth?). Guest guest
I agree Pam - I don't send candy to the soldiers but I have sent baby wipes and other things in the past. Sugarless gum is a nice treat.
