Guest guest
Reading about the prednisone studies and Autism, they say it may take 4-8 weeks for improvements to be seen, and that some might actually appear to regress prior to improving. My thought is you would need to commit to a longer term course of Prednisone to give it a real shot. I don't see any protocols like the one your MD is considering. Is this a DAN! doctor or a neurologist (or both?)? Sorry you are not getting that language. Pam > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > We are going to use it for improving speech. Guest guest
Not sure I would do this unless I was under the care of an MD who had solid experience with using Prednisone. This is a big undertaking with a drug that has real risks. Pam > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > We are going to use it for improving speech. Guest guest
Have you looked into lugol's iodine? I started my daughter on this in March and her teacher asked me what I was doing different with her. Prior to that, she was doing all the usual GFCFSF, supplements, etc. which all made a difference, but not nearly as much as the iodine. It made a remarkable difference in her sociability, expressive speech and ability to learn. There is a good book by Dr. Mark Brownstein " Iodine, Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without it " . Autistic kids and their mothers had 45% less iodine than a control group on studies. Iodine also helps with adrenal gland function which are the glands that produce your body's anti-inflammatory hormones. Iodine is also an excellent detoxifier of fluoride, chloride, bromine, lead and mercury. It also speeds up your metabolism, much the same way as thyroid hormones. It is interesting that your son is better when he has a fever, when his metabolism is revved up. Might be something for you to investigate before doing the prednisone. When I first started the iodine with her, she had a fever and other detox symptoms i.e. runny nose, dark poops, getting up earlier in the morning, some irritability. Initially, she even stuttered once or twice, but with breaks and good supplementation, there has been an amazing increase in the complexity of her speech and vocabulary and the stuttering stopped. I also noticed an increase in her appetite which has been horrendous after her 18 month MMR. ________________________________ From: " fermius@... Guest guest
But why bother with a trial of 1-3 weeks when the improvements are seen in some between 4-8 weeks? The protocols described on the research sites are several months long. If you see improvement in 1 week, then will you go for more? I guess that is something to prepare for. Guest guest
I forgot to add that my daughter's teacher noticed the greatest change in March with the iodine. Incidentally, we were on a cruise then and did not adhere to the GFCF diet for those 10 days. I was amazed about her progress despite a break from the diet - that blew me away. In terms of dosaging, we started out with one drop of the 5% Lugol's iodine solution every 3 days for 3 weeks. Then for the next month, we did 1 drop every 2 days. The following month, we did 1 drop daily for 2 weeks and then for 3 days on, 11 days on. This is only because we were preparing her little body for the DMSA chelation which we will start this weekend. The iodine worked so well that I really contemplated the need to do the DMSA. If your child is really toxic, you may want to start with 2% Lugol's iodine solution. If you google iodine and breast cancer, you can find a great list of detox symptoms to look for. The awful symptoms are usually from the release of bromine. To minimize the detox symptoms, increase your child's salt intake prior to starting, not table salt, the really good celtic sea salt or Himalayan crystal salt. What also helps is UNDA 2 with milk thistle added to it. Just add about 5 drops into juice 3 times a day, and get your child to drink as much fluoride free water (Dasani) as you can get them to drink. Also high dosing of vitamin C helps. If your child is still not detoxing comfortably, you could crush an ISOCORT into their juice - which is an adrenal herbal supplement just during the beginning phase. It does have a small amount of cortisol in it, so use it for short periods and wean down slowly. We did not need to use it for our 3 year old daughter, but did need it for our 10 year old. Like I said, she tolerated very well, better than me. I think this is because of my poor functioning adrenal glands. In fact, when I read detox symptoms of the iodine and DMSA, they appear to be the same as low adrenal symptoms. Sure enough, when I increase my adrenal meds, I tolerate the iodine much better. I think our kids are so young that for the most part, their adrenals are functioning better than ours. Something else to keep in mind is that one of the first place that mercury jumps into is the kidneys. Well the adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys. So, if your child is having a lot of adrenal symptoms, back off and take breaks. This is not a problem with iodine supplementation. Each drop contains about 6.25 mg of iodine. Depending on your child's weight and deficiency, they may need more or less. If they are improving and not having any detox symptoms, you can safely keep them on a drop every day or every other day. You could also do an iodine loading test if you really want to monitor things. We chose not to do this only because most (more than 90%) of the population is iodine deficient and autistic kids have been shown to have lower iodine levels than the general population of kids. When I spoke to my daughter's teacher last week, she said she never would imagined that Navia would be where she was by the end of the year. She learned only 1 letter in 4 months in the beginning of the school year. After the iodine in March, she started playing with the other kids at lunch for the first time and that coincided with a sudden and huge leap in her ability to learn. She now knows all her letter sounds and is working on pre-reading skills - absolutely incredible!!!. On the social interaction, her teacher said you could no longer see that Navia had any issue at all now. The other thing I have noticed is that she is no longer afraid of dogs. She used to have huge anxiety with any animals and now a dog can come right up to her and she doesn't scream uncontrollably to be picked up. She has also stopped lining up the dental floss and re-folding her clothes, and washing her hands ten times per day. The only area where I did not see an improvement is her stimming - her finger is still in her belly button quite a bit. I am confident with continued detoxing with the iodine and the DMSA, she will be caught up within the next year. ________________________________ From: rochelle b <mcroche2002@...> Sent: Wed, June 16, 2010 3:25:57 AM Subject: [ ] Re: prednisone-PAM Hi smart people, I am considering supplementing iodine for my 2 year old autistic son. Guest guest
I would assess for brain inflammation before treating for it. Usually when someone has inflamation in the body (anywhere, cannot be specific to place), a noticeable rise in the sed rate would be noted. Sed rate can be tested by a simple blood test. A CT Scan (although I do not recommend doing routinely) can also show inflammation. For me, I do not treat prophylactically with serious meds (maybe with vitamins and supplements, but not serious meds like cortisone). > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > We are going to use it for improving speech. Guest guest
It’s not clear in this instance that prednisone would be used for its anti-inflammatory effect. On a neuroanatomic basis it is difficult to identify localized brain areas that would affect language, toe-walking and visual stimming, leaving most other brain functions unimpaired. If there is a connection between prednisone and improvement in such a scenario, it seems more likely that it is due to prednisone’ s immunosuppressive effect, such as appears to be the mechanism in using prednisone to treat multiple sclerosis. I think there are enough kids walking around who are using long-term low-dose prednisone for treatment of asthma or eczema or JRA that the relative safety is established so long as there is close follow up. At the same time, I think that the mechanism of action is speculative. In my view, it would be wise to have definite expectations of what is to happen when before starting the treatment. If it occurs, OK. If not, stop the prednisone. Either way, the likelihood of doing serious harm, while under proper supervision, is probably acceptably small.
