Guest guest
Why don't you go to see the owner in person, sit down with him, and explain the situation? Tell him you really want to live there, but are already having problems physically, and ask if he would be willing to install some sort of handrail? A lot of people will refuse telephone requests, but sitting down and talking with someone will occasionally produce good results, especially if he wants a responsible person in there that he knows will take care of his property. ----- Original Message ----- From: foodisnotmylife Rheumatoid Arthritis Sent: Monday, October 24, 2005 1:28 AM Subject: handrails needed, i guess ( hi, i'm new to the group, not new to the doom and gloom of rheum-type moods and depression and sadness that just come along with everything else. but i'm still a pollyanna-well,most of the time except for when the pain is too much and the stiffness is too much more.anywho, i am moving (strictly for economic reasons) to a modular home that has two steps down to the ground like an RV or trailer home; and after only two days of carrying NOTHING in my hands or arms to carry into the place, just going up and down the steps a few times each day, i am so sore from my shoulders to my ankles that i am wondering how to get my deposit and first month's rent back.i am such a coward about confronting people to ask for a refund, especially people i have bought something from or paid to do something, and now i will have to either ask the owner to build handrails for me to use the steps a little easier on me or ask for my money back.it's only since friday that i paid him. what do you think?i am still in my apt. where they are raising the rent on the first but it's on the ground level, the door is. and, at the new place, they are paying all the utilities and providing a safer, quieter environment.it's a little one-room "house" situated in the middle of an RV park, so it's not as if the owner is a rental-estate agent or owner who does maintenance work.i need to move,i already paid them the money, but i could so easily fall. you know? what should i do? any ideas appreciated. thank you.beverley
Guest guest
Dear Beverly- If you need handrails, then ask the landlord. By rights he must make the entry handicap accessible. Rails on stairs are essential anywhere you rent. Its an insurance and liability issue as well. A landlord can be sued. He is required by law to provide rails for you to use. Dont be afraid to ask for what you deserve. Besides, I think he can get a tax write off for the upgrade. My girlfriend tripped on stairs that were in disrepair and sued her landlord. He had to pay all her medical bills and lower her rent besides. Tell him that it should be done regardless to protect him and yourself. Print out this email and give it to him, should you feel intimidated. If he will not make the repair, and you have to hire someone to build stairs, then he must take that amount off your rent for the month. I am sure he is reasonable and should do it for anyone he rents to, avoiding accidents. Remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Yours, Deborah
Guest guest
I agree with , but another point, lots of people are afraid of confrontation, they think it will be negative but don't go at this as confrontation, just go, like said, to talk to the person and see what you can work out together. Looking at it this way might help you.
