It is classed as a DMARD (Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drug) when used for RA and is generally one of the milder ones for effectiveness and also for side effects. They usually recommend an eye examination when starting and a recheck every six months although problems are rare. Sulafasalazine is another of the older DMARDs and is generally less effective than Methotrexate but also usually has fewer side effects except for people with sulfa allergies. Unfortunately people react diffeently to drugs both with respect to effectiveness and side effects. You have to try things to see how you do with them. I've never been on Plaquenil but it is fairly common as the first drug for RA. Most DMARDs take quite a while to become effective so you are likely to need patience to see if things work. Sometimes it takes as long as 3 to 6 months to get appeciable effects. God bless.

Subject: Adivise please?

Hello All

I have heard from my G.P. who has in turn had a report from the Specialist I saw 2 weeks ago. They want me to start on Hydroxychloroquine, has anyone any experience with this at all please?

Thanks
