Guest guest
What are the meds use for seizures? What the common side effects/risks? The thing I hear having the most success in those who don't talk is antiseizure medications or related things, which is pretty suggestive it is often either seizures or something closely related. Seizures and related phenomena are common in autisic children. If in doubt, check for them. If in doubt that they have been completely ruled out, try an antiseizure medication (at a modest dose) to see if it helps. Guest guest
could seizures also be responsible for not being able to transfer skills from school to home? and for forgetting skills acquired/mastered months ago? could they also be a reason for inability to potty train? we have done ac protocol for 6 years, hbot, ait, just started homeopathy. my 9 yr old son is still non verbal but wants to talk. still not potty trainied. has pre-academic goals in his iep. he has no physical signs of seizures. Guest guest
Seizures are common in our kids. Mitochondrial dysfunction is also common and strongly linked to seizures. We took my son to a neurologist and did a 1 hr EEG. It found nothing. When I showed the neurologist the weird facial tic that he makes, she said " children with autism often make unusual movements " . We did a SPECT scan and seizure focal sites were found. We started Lamictal (a seizure medication) and we've been titrating up to the target dose. Last week, at 1/2 way to our target dose, my son starts to use 3-5 word phrases fluently. He started using pronouns. I am very happy, but I'm also pissed. Why didn't someone look for seizures when he showed developmental delay at 2yo or was diagnosed with autism at 3yo? It seems like all of our kids should have an EEG. And not just a 1hour. They miss things all of the time. At least a 24hr or a SPECT or MEG scan. Some even believe that stimming may be a symptom of seizures. A lot of people are having success with Lamictal over other anti-seizure medications. Just an FYI if others have tried different anti-seizure meds without success. But now we have to work on the root cause of the seizures and start chelating. ________________________________ From: Liz <elizabethsoliday@...> Sent: Sun, January 24, 2010 2:31:00 PM Subject: [ ] Re: expressive speech  " forgetting skills acquired/mastered months ago " This is definitely a symptom and can probably be applied to the other things you mentioned (in other words, lacking continuity of things learned...unable to retrieve info learned). If you haven't tried it yet, I would do a trial of gluten elimination to see if that helps. Getting an EEG done would probably give you some useful info about whether there is seizure activity. I believe even absence seizures can contribute to problems with learning. > > > > You might want to rule-out seizures. Or try to fix the things that commonly cause seizures in our kids - metals, infections/bacteria , neurotransmitter problems, etc. Seizures can cause a block in speech areas. > > Yes. > > The thing I hear having the most success in those who don't talk is antiseizure medications or related things, which is pretty suggestive it is often either seizures or something closely related. > > Seizures and related phenomena are common in autisic children. > > If in doubt, check for them.
