Ohhhh Kim, thanks for the update. The fentanyl patch works great according

to Esther. And, Esther has no more neck pain since she had that very same

surgery. Our prayers go with you.

Hope the patch is working and that your pain is much better today, Kim.

Please give us an update when you can.

Hope the 22nd does the trick!

My little toe is clawed, we at CMT call that a hammer toe. It does make a bit

of trouble finding shoes. I am 33 I have had CMT since age 4 my toe is fine

other then trying to find shoes. Oh and have CMT.

Don't worry about what the podiatrist said.

Hi ,

As a child I had this done to both my pinky toes succesfully, the tendons were

lengthened and it made a big difference when choosing shoes. What you will

find is as he grows the toes will curl rather than being straight but over the

years this hasn't caused me much of a problem. I think any person with CMT

will tell you the purchase of shoes is a problem but you will soon find certain

stores that cater for your type of shoe. Only the other day I went out

shopping for new winter boots, I went to a department store in Glasgow and

asked and assistant for help in finding sensible boots with a bit of style for

" funny feet " , she told me what the best makes were to try and he presto I

got a pair. I really love them and best of all it was the first shop we tried

!!.

frequently. I am the mother of an 8 year boy who was just recently

diagnosed with CMT. Yesterday, I had him fitted for a new pair of orthotics,

and asked the podiatrist about my son's pinky toes which claw. This of course

makes it very difficult to find shoes for him as he is not comfortable. The

little

toes rub against the shoe material and squishes his toes. He (the podiatrist)

suggested either an elongation of the tendon which attaches to the toe or a

complete severing of this tendon. His reasoning was that if it continued to get

worse, as it probably will, he will have major problems later on, and may even

require a severing of the entire toe due to calcification build up or deformity.

Has anyone had this done? If so, I'd like to hear from you to see what the

outcome has been. If not, is there another way to treat this pronblem without

surgery. I get pretty freaked out when a physician mentions surgery on my

eight year old's feet. Any feedback will be gratly appreciated.

Hi Ouellette,

Owen here,

I have CMT 1 59 years old and over the years have had many orthopedic surgeries

feet, ankles and hands. My small toes clawed about when I was 6 years. old and

I never had the surgeries you have described. May I suggest you find a doctor

well versed in CMT. May be a wider shoe would help. At onetime a podiatric

doctor my parents took me to wanted to amputate my small toes. My parents

wisely sought other opinions. The other MDs thought it would be best to try all

other remedies first. My small toes may not be pretty but their are still with

me.

Happy Trails

God Bless America

He (the podiatrist) suggested either an elongation of the tendon

which attaches to the toe or a complete severing of this tendon. His

reasoning was that if it continued to get worse, as it probably will,

he will have major problems later on, and may even require a severing

of the entire toe due to calcification build up or deformity. Has

Hello,

Apart from suggesting a second, third and 4th opinion i'd like to give

you a hint: If the only tool you have is a hammer, everything around

you will start looking like a nail.

This translates into " don't see only podiatrists and surgeons " : they

do know most about pruning and grafting; you might consider seing some

rehab expert, or consider having a small modification in the shoes.

I had to try so many shoes...
