102 definitely

Hi everyone :)

My NT daughter has a fever of 102+ this am. No runny nose or any other symptom

really just cranky and clingy. My question is , I think its a general consensus

that a fever is good because it helps us fight off whatever is trying to get us

so not to treat to quickly. I surfed and found a site that said brain damage

occurs at 107.6. So okay most of us would be passed out face first in our

wheaties at 105 but at what point do you say fever is now too high and i'm going

to throw some Motrin at it? For me i think between 101 and 105. I just wanted to

know if anyone else has any insight or experience like " hey definitely don't go

over 103 because organ failure occurs " or something. ANy input would be great!

Actually, neurologic damage probably occurs at very high temperatures. I've

never seen it and had patients with temps of over 106. However, I recommend

treating at 104+, occasionally higher if I know the patient.

just noting...I have had an over 104 temp, about 6yrs ago..very quick spike -

ice packs helped until someone could get me meds (breastfeeding & had goopy

infection, ig)...sooo, lots of recovering for me, since then...but not

necessarily from the fever, imo. A growling kind of giggle - I now know that it

really isn't painful when your brain feels like it is cooking..not cool, but

okay-ish. And the lowerish temps (up to 102,103) do not faze me in the least -

use cool baths, menthol, stuff like that. Pretty much save the pain killers for

discomfort these days...elizabeth

When a temp is 102, I would assume that a child would become very uncomfortable

at that point. I could see waiting for an adult if u can deal but if it were my

kid, I treat with Motrin @ 102 and then throw in a few sliced onions in the

heels of their socks...lol. After a few hours, those onions will look like you

sautéd them in a pan. Just to be on the safe side I wouldn't risk a temp

spiking too fast. Then you run the risk of febrile seizures. Just my 2 cents!

I would treat it if it is >104 - if it goes too high it could lower the seizure

threshold. I, personally, would treat even if it was lower than that and my

child was really uncomfortable.

All I know is my son had 105 temp. for 3 days. Tepid baths, tylenol, nothing

brought it down until the doctor gave him a shot of some kind. It caused febrile

seizures and possible neurological damage. It was in reaction to a dtp vaccine,

so the damage was either caused by the vaccine or the temp.

I would think there is a reason for fever. My oldest son had strep several

times. The first couple of times there was a raging fever and sore throat.

After about 4 bouts the only symptoms were crankiness and a low grade

fever.

===>This is when we treat, when they are uncomfortable. Discomfort creates

stress which uses up huge amounts of nutrients.
