Hi Steph the reason you didn't see my message until today is I was posting to the group for 2 weeks but my messages were not being sent to the group. I could not figure out why until I got a hold of and he said they monitor the messages. Well some how my messages never got sent to the group till yesterday. Talking all those meds do not have any side effects? I am so afraid of meds. Never had much luck with meds as I get side effects. How did the dr find out you had RA. I am going to the Rhuemy on the 7th. What do they usually do? Make you have an mri?

Hi Bonnie,

Yes, reading the side effects of the meds can be scary. My symptoms started in my last semester in college. Over several weeks, I lost the use of the left side of my body, which is my dominant side. After 12 doctors, lucky #13 was a rheumatologist. He said my SED rate was high (normal is 0-20, mine was 353). My rheumatoid factor was negative, and it still is.

I am fortunate that my meds have not given me any side effects. I have made some dietary changes. Upon advice of my rheumy I eat as much organic foods as possible -- specifically fruit, milk, pasta sauce, etc. The only leap I cannot make is gluten free pasta (blame the Italian in me!) I make sure my medication is always taken with food. I drink organic whole milk every day.

When my diagnosing rheumy gave me brochures on methotrexate & the new biologics I was very concerned. When I was dx'd the biologics Enbrel & Remicade had just been approved for arthritis in 1999. Like Harold mentioned earlier, the extreme side effects don't occur very regularly. The companies have to list everything anyone on the medication has ever experienced.

Choosing whether or not to take the meds is a personal choice every person with a chronic illness must make. For me it is a choice of quality of life. When I was dx'd I was 22 years old. I couldn't imagine living in the physical state I was experiencing forever. I seriously contemplated suicide. For me, the risk is worth it.

When I was dx'd, the rheumy did blood tests, X-rays, an MRI of my hip, a Cat scan of my arm and a bone density exam (commonly called a DEXA).

Take care,

Steph in VA

Hi Harold thanks for responding. I will have to find out Mon when I see the rheumy if he is going to put me on meds. Do any of you take flaxseed oil to help?

Yes, I take flaxseed oil and also fish oil and ginger in addition to a multivitamin, extra vitamins C, D and E, and calcium citrate. I have no idea if any of these things really work but I have heard they are all good and will not hurt so I take them. God bless.

I think I'm older than both of you put together. I'm 78 and sometimes I act like I'm going on 15. God bless.

I've just started putting flaxseed flour in some of my cooking. It says to add 2 tablespoons to breads, soups, whatever. I'm not sure what it does for RA but I know it's good for you so I am putting it in foods for my whole family to enjoy the benefits. I'm making a hotdish(yes I'm from Minnesota) tonight and I will put the flour in there. Actually I think it's called ground flaxseed.

hi, Bonnie! I do not take flax seed oil, however, I do take evening primrose oil capsules. this was recommended by my ob/gyn (along with soy) for menopause/hot flashes. and then I read in the arthritis magazine, that it is good for RA also. it works for me! gentle hugs! I read that flaxseed is beneficial with stopping food cravings and helps the cramping with

PMS and that time of the month.

I've been taking flaxseed pills off and on for a few months, but I may start taking it all of the

time, as it may help my RA.

I read a couple of reports on the internet that doctors are recommending that everyone

with RA take fish oil capsules as it helps with inflammation.

I haven't taken this fish oil more than a few times, so I can't say that it works for me.
