I have always considered a flare up to be a period where I deal with constant

and more annoying pain than usual, and it usually goes on for a few weeks

or longer. & nbsp; I am not sure what the actual medical criteria is for

a flare up...anybody??

Hi a:

Sorry to hear about your flare and your husband's back. I think maybe you

are right about the flare being caused by changing meds. Why did your dr.

change you? Perhaps it will take awhile for the Enbrel or is it Celebrex to

get into your system and work. I am afraid if you change back, the Voltran

won't work again and you will be in a bigger mess. I remember it took so so

long for the MTX to kick in......I mean months. That is why I got so high on

Prednisone to hold me over. Now the MTX has put me into remission and I'm

tapering off Prednisone. However, if you can, stay away from Prednisone

because it is very very hard to get off. I know of people who are on 1mg.

and flare if they go off completely. I am at 11mg. and hope it does not

happen to me once I get down there.

Us RA's have a real time with our bodies don't we? If your hands and wrists

are hurting, I don't blame you for not wanting to type much. It seems to

only make things worse. Try heat on them. The rice sock I wrote about the

other night is great.

Hope you get to feeling better soon. Take care. Jeannette

This is distressing news, a! I'm wondering about your change in meds,

too. Hmmmmm.

I'm really hoping that your flare will end quickly and that your hands,

wrists, and elbows will be back to normal.

Hi a,

So sorry to read about your flaring of your hands, wrists and elbows

:(.

Does this mean that you officially have RA now? I know that you had

said before that your hands were not affected so you were not really

sure if you had RA. We really feel for you :(. Also, so sorry to hear

about

's back :(.

Hang in there........we will be here to comfort. *Hugs*

Sorry to hear you're flaring. My right wrist is one of my most painful parts

This morning after just one day on Voltaren, I feel a change.

Hi a,

I am new to the list and what I have to say may be old

news. If so, I am sorry for being boring but...

I also have RA in my hands and wrist. I have gotten

carts for every job around the house. I have a clothes

hamper on wheels and a rolling cart to put folded

clothes on when it is time to return them.

I have a cart to put groceries in when I unload the

car.I even have a small cart I use to set the table or

clear the table.

I have found these really keep me from overusing my

hands are wrist.

My husband and friends call be the " Cart Queen "

I just smile and say " It works! "

Thanks Tery. I'm glad your wrist has fused, and hope it is now painfree.

I have one ankle that fused, and the other one is almost all fused, but when

they act up, it is not fun.

Rose,

Thanks for the tips. I learned a lot about carts when my children

were young and I couldn't carry them because my knees and ankles

were so bad. I used a small baby stroller

for moving them from room to room, carrying laundry and about

anything else that I wanted moved.

Don't think your tips are boring! Even if I heard them a hundred times

before, we have new people that can benefit from other people's experiences.

I am upset at how clumsy I've become. I don't know if I am loosing

strength in my hands from RA or FM, but whatever the reason, I'm dropping

everything and can't open things.

I love your ideas, thanks for sharing.

Rose,

One thing you can be thankful for is that you have a dr. that wants to keep

tabs on how you are doing. So many people complain about the poor care they

are getting for the treatment of their RA etc.

It will be difficult for you to do all the up coming work, can you ask for an

aide?

Hi a,

I have also been dropping everything I put in my

hands. I thought maybe it was just old age.:-)

Now I can blame it on RA.

I went to the doctor today. He said my x-rays and

blood test showed I still had a lot of inflammation in

the joints in my hands. My first thought was " I have

to pay you for this information- I could have told you

that. " But I was nice, I didn't say it.

I have to start working in my classroom next week.

Unpacking boxes, putting up boards, cleaning desk, and

putting out books. Since we both figure my pain level

will go up with all this over use of my hands the

doctor told me to take one celebrex in the morning and

the afternoon until I can get back to a less hetic

schedule. ( Like teaching 25 eight year olds will be

less hetic)

I have to call him every week and let him know if it

is hurting my stomach.

I am learning so much from this list. I thank everyone

for sharing with me.

Hi Jeannette,

Yes, I do like my doctor and have confidence in him.

He is young, but everyone is young compared to me.

He has a short beard and wears jeans, cowboy shirts and

boots. He makes me smile when I see him come down the

hall with his white coat flying behind him.

I won't have an aide until after school starts and

then only a couple hours a day. But I do have

wonderful co-workers.

I went to school today and found the husband of one of

the teachers sweeping spider webs from the windows in

my room.He had taken down my curtains and said his

wife was going to wash them and he would put them up

next week. He had also cleaned my ceiling fan. When he

said he would be back next week to help me move

furniture around, I thanked him and he said his wife

told him to come help me and he always does what she

says. :-)

Others have offered to help fill in folders and

computer cards the first few weeks of school. So I am

really blessed with good friends. Most of us have

taught together for 10 years or more so we are an

extended family. When my husband had a stroke several

years ago they were the force that kept me together.

So I guess for each bad thing that comes our way like

RA there are also good things like friends.

Oh, by the way I have a cart for moving books and

things around my classroom. :-)))))

Rose,

I'm so gald you had help. It's really hard for me to ask people to help me.

I love getting help, I am just afraid of being a burden to others. Stems

from being the 12th of 13 children. Always felt in the way. Someone once

said to be that I am always willing to help others, and thus being a

blessing, so I need to let peole help me so they can be blessed. I'm glad

that gentlemen listens to his wife :)

Jeanette,

Being such a difficult disease to diagnose and treat, I think frustration

levels are higher for both RA patients and doctors. We get angry and

frustrated at meds that don't work, meds with toxic side effects, and

doctors that have to use trial and error to try to find our best drug

cocktails. I think the majority of us feel we get good care from our

doctors. Maybe I'll poll the group and see what the percentages are just

out of curiosity. Although I don't particularly like my " stuffed shirt "

doctor, I can't complain about the quality of care. I just wish he could

cure me and I get frustrated at watching my body deteriorate.

Teaching 25 eight year olds is enough to make you drop everything! I hope

you don't stress your hands to much getting your classroom ready.

Good luck with the Celebrex. I hope it keeps you pain free.

Rose,

I love all your uses for carts. Since I am having back problems now, I am

really aware of how much carts help us.

You will have your hands full at school but if you can keep busy, it is

best. That is what I have found anyway. In the last month, I have been

sitting around so much and I am getting tired of it.

Good luck with the Celebrex.

Hi a,

I am sorry to hear you are flaring and that the summer has not been one of

boating and camping

for you. I know how important it to you. Your web page is great!!!! I am very

impressed!!!

Thanks for giving us acess to it.

My sister was here from Toronto for 2 weeks along with two of her friends. We

spent a lot of

time at our cabin and it brought up a lot of grief around my parents. I have

been exhasted

since she left. We spent a day in Seattle and went to the Experience Music

Project. It was

quite interesting. Days like that seem to set me back for weeks. For the first

time in my

life I am wondering if I am depressed, I have no motivation or enthusiasum and

I just don't

seem to be myself. Maybe its a mid-life crisis, who knows. I think being

parentless has had

a greater impact on me than I ever would have guessed it would.

I hope your flare is easing up and that you will get some summer fun in!!

Trish,

I'll just have to hope next summer is better. Maybe by then I'll have found

my drug combo. Glad you like the web site. Now that it's been graded, I'll

be adding more to it.

I'm glad you had a nice visit with your sister. I'm sure the reflections of

your parents brought back the painful memories of the fact that they are

gone. It must be a hard thing to deal with. I am very close to my parents,

and can't imagine loosing them. I sure your visit brought back happy

memories too. It is common to be depressed after loosing a parent. I hope

you feel better.

Bev -

I don't have any suggestions - just want to send some hugs your way. I am so

sorry you are having a hard time.

I am headed for (the dreaded) colonoscopy today, to see what is causing my

colon problems. Will lift you up in my prayers...

take care, & hold in there...

I'm so sorry you're flaring too. You've had a rough year, particularly the

past couple of months. And you certainly deserve so much better. I'll be

praying that this year holds a miracle for you, and for all of us.

Lots of love,

Carol

[ ] Flaring

Hi All,

Just wanted to post a short note. Many things going on. My cat, Toots, has

been sick. She scared me to death. She was drooling and staring into space

and not responding. I thought she had a stroke or something. I rushed her

to the vet and he said it was an infection and gave antibiotics and IV

fluids. She is much better now.

I went to the rheumy on Friday. He is disturbed by the MRI report and also

noted that my knees were a little puffy. He asked me if I wanted to try to

taper the pred. from 5 mg to 2.5 mg and I agreed. Well I woke up this am in

a pre flare state. My knees are stiff and painful as well as my wrists. I

am so fatigued that all I did today was rest most of the time. I called him

and told him that I was going back to the 5 mg for now. The psoriasis on my

hands is starting to get out of control. I have been putting hydrocortisone

ointment on them and wrapping them. It seems to help a bit. My back is

extremely painful and I can't wait to see the neuro on the 2nd. Enough

whining.

I want to wish all of you a very happy new year. I hope that all of you

have

a better next year than the last one. Keep hoping for that miracle

treatment.

Love and Hugs

Stacey
