Guest guest
July 26, 2010 The Americans with Disabilities Act Celebrates 20 Years On July 26, 1990, President H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the first comprehensive declaration of equality for people with disabilities. In 2008, his son, President W. Bush, signed the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) to restore protections promised by the ADA of 1990, but rescinded by unfavorable Supreme Court decisions that interpreted the protections of the statute narrowly. The 20th Anniversary of when ADA became law the U.S. is a good time to reflect on the positive and significant changes brought into people's lives by this landmark legislation. The law ensures that every American with disabilities can enjoy the same rights and freedoms as all Americans: equal opportunity, full participation, independent living and economic self-sufficiency. The ADA makes it possible for everyone to live a life of freedom and equality. It protects the rights of people with disabilities in all aspects of employment and guarantees access to public services (such as transportation) and accommodations (such as restaurants, stores, hotels and other businesses), open to the public. Today approximately 54 million Americans -- or one in every five people -- have a disability. As the number continues to grow, the protections provided by the ADA are more important than ever.
