Hello. This one is for the ladies mostly. Does anyone on the board

who has RA have any issues with endometriosis? I have been having

excessive cramping and bloating at ovulation and during my period since

March 2005. I am 31 years old and have had RA since I was 6. It also

seems to affect my bladder and cause frequesnt urgency. Has anyone

ever been diagnosed with intersistial cystitis? (An inflammation of the

bladder without having the ususal UTI.

If so, what treatments did you seek?

Thanks!

Vicki G.

Your hormones could be to blame here. I would have your thyroid checked and also your hormone level. RA can cause goiters on the thyroid and cause it to be over or underactive. My thyroid is now normal but my testosterone level is very very low. you should know what your estrogen level is. You should also have your FSH and LH level checked. That is the hormone that stimulates ovaries during cycles. It could be over active causing the symptoms you describe. As for the bladder, sounds like a UTI. Have you had a family history of Endo? Have you had surgery that can cause adhesions to form? Yours, Deborah

Hi Vicki,

I have not had endometriosis. I used to have horrible periods but they have been eased by taking birth control pills & the ibprofen I take for my RA. I was dx'd with interstitial cystitis (IC) in 1996, 3 years before I was dx'd with RA. As far as treatment, I had a bladder biopsy to confirm the IC and was on antibiotics for 6 months. I had to do bladder exercises too. After my symptoms subsided, the FDA approved an Rx for IC (I think it is called imitrex but I could be wrong.)

If you have more questions about it, you can email me privately since this isn't directly about RA.

Take care,

Steph in VA

Imitrex is for migraine syndrome.
